I am happy that I wasn't the only person that was unsatisfied with function notation.

I would say, as far as we speak about a single independent variable, there is no much difference, but if we had a function of 2 input variables, say p and q, I would prefer f(p=1, q=3). However I might have just written a heresy - I don't know whether in maths, a function can receive multiple arguments, just like in programming languages.
