Tutorial: Repair disk errors - PROPER use of chkdsk

Is chkdsk stuck at 10% or 11% for you? Well, then watch this tutorial how to circumvent the check on boot and finish the process in much shorter time!

IF YOUR CHKDSK /F HAS ALREADY STARTED AND YOU'RE STUCK AT *SCANNING AND REPAIRING*:
Watch the *hard drive LED* for one minute. *If it blinks, it's not safe to turn off*. If it doesn't light up, then chkdsk is not working and it's *safe* to turn off.

So your PC is now off. Turn it on again. Now, *before* the chkdsk can start again, *turn the PC off*. Repeat this 2-3 times. Now, instead of chkdsk, it should bring you to *Automatic Repair*. From there, choose to *change startup behavior*, reboot, and then select *Safe Mode with Command Line*. Now do the exact steps as shown in the video. After next reboot, chkdsk should be gone and your system should boot normally.

Chkdsk /scan differs from Chkdks /f, in that with Windows 8 and higher, some repairs can be performed without dismounting the disk. If a dismount is required, it's automatic and will prompt to reboot to run the repairs.

When running chkdsk from the command prompt within Windows, I would recommend also opening up Task Manager, going to the Performance tab, and opening Resource Monitor. From there, go to Disks, and click the checkbox for chkdsk.exe within the Processes with Disk Activity. This lets you see that the chkdsk is still alive and doing or trying to do something, even if the status within the command prompt screen hasn't updated for some time. If the activity has been flatlined in the Resource Monitor, or the chkdsk process no longer is listed, then you have a much better indicator that chkdsk isn't going to be solving your specific issue, and you can Ctrl C in the command prompt window to gracefully end the process.
