Tommy Lee Jones character is a Homesman. So many women in the American West suffered complete psychological collapse, usually resulting from the deaths of their entire family and/or sexual violence, that a whole profession existed to look after them. A Homesman, usually a retired lawman, military officer, or gunfighter, would escort them back to a major city where they could receive medical care or be taken in by friends or surviving family. The wagon in this scene has several such psychologically catatonic women inside. The book this film is based on, 'The Homesman', is excellent.

Fun fact native Americans would use horses as a form of currency in trading as it was one of the most valuable commodities as they could use them for hunting and traveling so I doubt they’d eat the horse

I always marveled at how people could consider "Dances with Wolves" as depicting the Dakota Indians as a typically peaceful, gentle tribe ----while also showing Pawnees pumping arrows into white settler families.

The Homesman was TLJ's 2nd film after The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and is one of several outstanding Westerns I've seen this century. The fact a certain character does not make it to the end long before you expect was quite shocking but there's quite a few jolts in Homesman that make you sit up straight.

Not a chance that they would eat the horse, it's an amazing asset for hunting and defense, as well as caring huge cultural and spiritual significance
