Sioyek: A PDF Reader For Researchers??

Today we're looking at an odd PDF reader, it's not just intended to be used for regular PDFs, obviously it works great for that. But where it shines is working with research papers and provides a few interesting functions to make that easier.

Hi! The developer of sioyek here.
First of all, I would like to thank you for this great video. According to my friends, you explained the features much better than myself XD.
I wanted to address some issues raised in the video:
* Table of contents: My assumption is that the document you are testing doesn't have table of content metadata in the PDF file. Note that table of content metadata is different from the table of contents shown in the PDF document itself. PDF documents usually include some metadata about the table of contents to help PDF viewing software.
* Portals: Note that we don't automatically create portals from all possible references (that would create a lot of false positives and clutter your document). So you have to manually create the portals. Therefore, it is the intended behavior that you see a black screen when you open the second window because you don't have any portals yet (although admittedly I should display a more helpful message instead of a black screen) . There are two ways to create a portal: You can navigate to the source of the portal and press p and then navigate to the destination and press p again, or you could alternatively just press p and then click/middle click on a link that would take you to the destination. For example if you press p and then middle click on 'Figure 9.4' it creates a portal from the location of the text 'Figure 9.4' to the location of the figure itself.
* You are absolutely right about the configuration paths. Unfortunately, I was a complete newb in linux configuration paths and I made some stupid decisions. In more recent commits I have added the ability to use more sane paths for linux configuration files.

I have been searching for a PDF reader that lets me use dark mode, and now I have Sioyek! Thank you Brodie for showcasing this, and thank you developer of Sioyek for saving my eyes from burning while I try and keep a' learning.

I've got a few research papers I'm working on now. I'll give this a try. Thanks Brodie.

Just installed this and gave it a quick run around the block.
You're cautiously optimistic about Sioyek, not least given it's still an early version (currently: 0.31.6-3).
Nonetheless, this is an amazing leap forward for PDF reading, annotating and research: not withstanding a few shortcomings, it's a game-changer AFAIAC.
It's almost precisely the very tool I have been waiting for my entire professional and academic career.
It feels a little Heath Robinson in UX terms ... but still a simple yet enormous leap forward for academic users, researchers and such.
Delighted.
Excited to see where the developers take this gem going forward ...
:-)

This looks interesting! I actually switched from Zathura to Evince because it has Vim keybindings too but you can also highlight text and take notes. I might give this a try once it's more developed!

Okular is awesome too! You can even do dark mode really well.

zathura was great for me, with the only downside being how annoying it was to cycle between 3-4 pdfs at once. maybe this is a good alternative

I wish I could find a good and user friendly PDF editor for Linux that supports adding/editing table of contents (index) with links.

Interesting I will give it a try thanks !

It seems to be a fork of sorts of MuPDF—or at least it is heavily based upon it, as it is included in the package.

I don't understand how to install Sioyek. I've downloaded the linux zip, but there is only an AppImage in there. How am I supposed to edit the config file if there is nothing than an executable AppImage? Also anyway I can actually install it on Ubuntu for my system to recognize it? I always have to run it using the terminal or opening the folder and right click run it and can't set it as default pdf reader

Looks nice but I still prefer Okular because it has annotations.

Does it support play embedded videos, like for beamer presentations? If not this is not for researchers at all

I rather use my mouse not write down stupid shortcuts to do different crap on pdfs

Scientists should spend their time doing research and reading papers, not learning how to use a tool like a PDF reader…
