City of London has its own mayor. Although they have different responsibilities from the larger London government.

Another fun fact, London didn't grow from the City of London but from the Westminster which was implanted in the hope of attracting some of the success of the City of London.
Whilst the City of London stayed within its wall, Westminster and other town grew and eventually surrounded the City of London. These were unified in 1889 where London started designating the unified county rather than specifically the City of London.

Also the wider "London" used to be referred to as just The Metropolis. Which is why the police who has jurisdiction over that larger area are called "The Metropolitan Police" not "The London Police".

The exact same thing in Istanbul. The original city of Constantin was of a much smaller area and there are gate names still in use representing entries of the city such as: Edirne-kapı, Top-kapı, Silivri-kapı etc. ("kapı" meaning "gate" in Turkish)

The wall was for tax reasons, you would pay import/export tax when transporting goods in/out of the walled part of the city. All markets where inside the city.

FYI: This is where the richest people go to dodge taxes ;)

There is a Roman road that goes in an almost straight line from London Bridge, over 50 miles to a city in the South of England called Chichester. Chichester also has a lot of its Roman wall in place. The road is called Stane Street and much of that road is still in use today as well.

That is the richest patch of land in the world. The City of London Corporation (Col Corp) owns 14 overseas financial jurisdictions and about 1/3 of all banks across the world on the financial secrecy Index. It's estimated they control about 33% of the global wealth compared the entire US which amounts to 17%....and yet its the size of a few football fields. All of it private wealth.

A fun fact about the wall is that it was used well into medieval times for defence, ofc it was repaired here & there but it’s amazing to imagine that it held up as a fortification for so lonh

I stayed at a hotel built right next to it. As an American who lives in the suburbs where everything is like barely 50 years old I was just mind blown. Touching it like wtf thousands of years old 🤯

I myself have explored London and Greater London quite extensively. It’s an interesting and wonderful city.

It looks like we should have had a Wall Street.

The Roman capital city, Colchester, also has a wall that is older than this.

I feel I am watching the map of roman Zaragoza, the moment you say "...on this map you can see a wall the romans built..." . The only difference is that old Zaragoza is at the south of river Ebro. And when I see those parts of the wall, I also have a familiar feeling.

It’s very interesting to learn about Roman's Londinium, from remains of the city wall to excavated ruins of a bathhouse and amphitheatre!😅

The river has ashes from when the city was burned over the 1000s of years of time. And I think they found a car down there once.

the most important fact is that the city of London is an independent city-state inside Englnad just like the Vatican in Italy

Isn’t the city of London now where banks and insurance companies operate with impunity?
