Chicago, 1927. A recording session. Tensions rise between Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), her ambitious horn player (Chadwick Boseman), and the white management determined to control the legendary “Mother of the Blues.” Based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by George C. Wolfe. Starring Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown and Taylour Paige. Coming to Netflix December 18.

Director George C. Wolfe's adaptation of playwright August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is many things. It's a testament to the power of the blues. It's a story about artists who refuse to compromise or let social prejudices define them. It's a showcase for some of the finest actors in Hollywood, and it's full of all the human drama and excitement you've come to expect from the talent involved. Here's everything you should know before you watch Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

While the play and film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a fictionalized story about a Blues singer and her band, Ma Rainey was a real life musician.

During her heyday, Ma Rainey went by many names, but she's remembered as the "Mother of the Blues," honoring her status as one of the very first Black women to become a professional blues singer, as well as one of the first blues vocalists whose voice was immortalized in recordings.

In the first five years of her career, Rainey lent her voice to over 100 records, cementing her legacy as one of the founding matriarchs of the genre and paving the way for the countless blues, soul, and R&B singers who followed.

While Rainey passed away in 1939, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and is still widely remembered for her flamboyant costumes, her elaborate stage shows, and her powerful, raw singing voice. She's also known for frank and evocative lyrics, which didn't shy away from expressing Rainey's sexuality or her Southern upbringing.

I hate we want see Chadwick anymore because everything he plays on he leaves his mark and an Oscar. So happy he got to play this role. He was amazing 👏

A terrific movie with stellar performances from Davis and Boseman. It became apparent while watching the movie that we were watching a great actor who knew he was dying and was physically showing signs of decline while playing a character who was destroying himself, attempting to escape his reality and exorcise his demons. It is a truly moving powerful and spiritual performance

I watched this after seeing it. I agree totally. The caliber of acting is exquisite! Thankfully, Boseman was able to stamp his mark on several films before his untimely death. Davis has added to her stellar performances with her Ma Rainey role. One can only hope they continue to adapt Wilson's works into screenplays like this one.

Read the play almost 20 years ago, in English class. Absolutely loved it back then (lots and lots of food for thought). Watching the movie today, I was moved to tears. August Wilson was a genius and what he wrote will have meaning for centuries to come. Also, great performances and directing! (I'm sorry for bad spelling, English is not my native language).

I've watched it 4x already and it instantly has become one of my favorites of all time. Great praise to the late grate August Wilson and cast & crew attached bringing the play to movie production. Just a Masterpiece by all & of course Ms Viola Davis & late grate Mr. Chadwick Boseman.

"Go in important. Leave important." - James Brown.

Even though Chadwick was very gravely ill, he still delivered the goods.
Tragically he never got to see the finished result, but he left a small but fabulous
legacy that will remain unbeaten. He would be nodding with approval, wherever
he is now.

Just finished watching this movie. Although it was good, I can't help but be slightly disappointed. This movie was not about Viola's character Ma Rainey. It was mainly about Chadwick's character Levve.. Instead of naming the movie Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, they should have named it Levve's Fool A$$...

It was hard to watch at first. Hard to see how small Chadwick had got and no one knew why.. Rip King..
