Watch This Before You See Midsommar

Ari Aster arrived in a big way with the release of his directorial debut, Hereditary. The 2018 horror film received acclaim from critics and horror fans, with many calling it one of the scariest films in years. His follow-up film, Midsommar, is clearly something different, even though it is still classified as a horror film.

While Hereditary featured darkened rooms and deep shadows, Midsommar’s horror will happen in the bright sunshine, and it is inspired by folk horror films from the 1970s like The Wicker Man. Let’s take a look at what you should know before you see Midsommar.

Are you going to see Midsommar opening weekend?

You see, that's why I want to see it. There is no jump-scares it's all psychological and that is my definition of Horror

Jump scares do not equal horror. Audiences have fallen down the rabbit hole of expecting a loud noise, and sitting on edge waiting for it to happen. Ari Aster doesn’t follow this convention - he makes true, terrifying horror.

I'm so excited for this. Slow burn horror needs more attention.

I saw Midsommar this weekend and I was honestly so uncomfortable, shocked, and confused that I sat in the theater for 10 minutes and cried. The movie had had triggered a mild panic attack for me. Now, don't be put off by that, I thought it was one of the most intelligent and beautiful films I've ever seen. It was surprising and terrifying without gimmicks. I feel that if a movie can intensely influence me mentally and emotionally like that, then I consider it a great piece of cinema.

I am so sick and tired of cheap jumpscares, comic relief, and overdone plots in "horror" films. Jordan Peele and Ari Aster have given me hope again.
Edit: So, I watched it. Ahhhh, not as good as Hereditary--but it still wasn't bad. Still felt a bit fucked up afterward so it did its job.
Second edit: You people are dull. Yes, dear, I am fully aware of their comedy and jumpscares. Take a light joke, ffs lol

I love how Aster is breaking from conventional horror tropes, and integrating other genres in order to create original films. I cannot wait to see Midsommar!

Horror movies where everything is dark doesn't make me scared because I can't see shit on the screen.

The darkness in horror movies ruin the whole movie.

It's a horror movie cliche.

i loved how throughout the film, small things like the flowers on danis crown move, and chris’ eyes and nose are edited to grow and shrink, just enough for you to wonder if its just your eyes or not! because of all the drugs they take

If anyone could improve on a remake of Hitchcock's "The Birds" - I like Ari Aster for being the one.

Nothing can prepare you for this film, but it's worth seeing if you are in a good mental state. Absolutely wouldn't recommend for anyone with any type of mental illness: anxiety, depression, bipolar, PTSD, etc. Took me several weeks to feel normal again after this one, but I'm sure that's what Aster intended. A mastermind of the genre for sure
