NASA wants a second moon lander for the Artemis astronauts, in addition to SpaceX's Starship.
NASA announced on March 23 that it will support the development of a second lander to transport astronauts to and from the lunar surface, providing competition for the later "sustainable" phase of the Artemis program with SpaceX.
The agency announced that it will soon launch a competition for Sustaining Lunar Development, which will fund work on a second lander in addition to the existing Human Landing System award given to SpaceX in April 2021. The award will include both an unscrewed demonstration landing and a crewed landing.
A second lander could cost significantly more than the $2.9 billion awarded to SpaceX under HLS Option A. This new strategy, however, is not entirely novel. NASA originally planned to choose multiple private crewed landers for Artemis in order to have redundancy and to drive the teams building the vehicles through competition.
