What works the best, a Gutter strainer or Gutter Guard?

3-years later. Any updates? I'm starting to think the idea of not having any downspouts and using some sort of plate 1-2ft below the trough with a "splash & spray" feature whereby it "throws" the water away from the house and not in one specific area?

The square gaps are not as tight or small or say a mesh guard so I was thinking that surely smaller leaves and debris can still make it through?
