Shinzo Abe state funeral: World leaders, family gather to honour ex-PM

Friends, world leaders and family gathered on Tuesday in Tokyo to attend the state funeral of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated in July.

Current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and the man who preceded him, Yoshihide Suga, each paid tribute to Abe, who had held the role twice, the most recent for eight years straight. Suga, speaking as Abe's friend, remembered spending time with Abe at the prime minister's office and said all the staff were "bright and full of energy" when they worked together.

"I will say this repeatedly, prime minister Abe, you were a true leader to our country Japan," he said.

Abe's ashes were carried into the Nippon Budokan Hall by his widow, Akie, when the ceremony began before officers placed it at the front of the hall below a large portrait of the former prime minister.

Abe may well have been a popular prime minister in the administration of Japan, although evidence to the contrary seems abundant. Nevertheless, what servants of the public always seem to forget is that the person who serves as prime minister is nowhere near as important as the position itself—at least without demonstrating qualities admirable as a person. The prime minister position is an important position. The person who occupies it is merely a servant—one among hundreds—of the People. By all means give Abe the send off the People think appropriate, but do so because Abe deserves it as a person, not because as a servant of the People he momentarily occupied the position of prime minister. The decision to have the taxpayers pay for a citizen’s funeral must come from the taxpayers, not from servants of the taxpayers. In no form of master-servant relationship does a servant determine the fate of another servant, legally, without the consent of the master. When Will bureaucrats everywhere come to realise they are civil servants, not civil masters, or civil dictators, or civil authorities…unless they gain the consent of the People they serve?
