David & David explain how the iPhone Battery Health percentage is, well, a lie. Other YouTubers say there are tricks to keeping your iPhone at 100% Battery Health, but the truth is that the number is inaccurate to begin with, and it doesn't matter.

We dig into iPhone Analytics to show you how the Battery Health percentage is calculated and tell you why you really shouldn't worry about the Battery Health percentage in Settings on your iPhone.

I love when people actually know what they are talking about! Cheers for the video

I just Wished they never put that Number in the Phone
It seriously gives me anxiety and I check it too often, lmao

Thank you for putting this out there and sharing this information with us. Some of these youtubers really think they are just so scientifically managing their battery because of some crap they picked up somewhere and decided it had to be true.

Very useful informations thank you guys ♥️

I have to agree. It’s impossible to maintain that 100% battery health unless you won’t use your phone at all. It all comes down on how you charge/use your phone .

Guess what? I watched this video three times and my battery capacity went up to 99%! Now, call me a liar, 😄
Nice job D²! Been with you a couple of years and enjoyed the voyage!

It would be interesting to see a comparison of a phone that has only been fast charged vs another that was charged slower over its lifetime.

2 years into the future and the 15 pro max now shows how many cycles you’ve used in the settings. Not sure if it was added in older model iPhones. So that’s nice you can see it now

You both are sweet and lovable. The different tips are useful especially to a grandma like me who has a constant love - hate relationship with technology.

“Its not a perfect science” it is, we just have multiple unknown variables. So we are working with imperfect data and should expect errors in predictions. But the science itself is pretty solid

Interesting video and very informative. Calling the battery health a "lie" is a little strong though; what you've actually exposed is the difficulties of predicting Li-Po battery health. As you mentioned, the installed battery capacity is often much higher than the rated capacity of the battery; and this is a side-effect of the chemical nature of the battery (as not all Li-Po's are made equal).

So how do iPhone's measure the battery health?
Well, most (if not all) micro-electronic circuits that use a Li-Po battery will rely on a battery impedance measuring IC called a "fuel gauge" for determining battery health. These fuel gauge chips continuously measure the internal impedance of the battery as it cycles through charge/discharge. To accurately predict the remaining capacity, health etc, these fuel gauges first need a learning cycle to find the min/max of the batteries capacity. For the most accurate learning cycle, the gauge needs a controlled environment, so it is impractical to do this on the device once it's shipped to the customer. Instead, the fuel gauge is calibrated during development and a "golden image" is produced from this calibration. This golden image can then be installed to all devices to allow your iPhone is able to "accurately" report battery health on first activation. However, as we know, the battery in your iPhone will have a lower/higher capacity than that of the battery the golden image was trained on, so reported battery health/capacity is always going to vary . One thing to note: fuel gauges can become "forgetful" if they don't "see" a full discharge/charge cycle for a long-time (anyone remember the never-ending 1% bug?). Apple does a lot to make the iPhone/iOS user experience as smooth as possible, but the battery capacity/health is always a best guess based on a number of historic metrics and real-time estimates meaning there are always going to be discrepancies.

BUT, as you say, this doesn't matter! 99%+ of iPhone users won't notice or care about their battery health/capacity.
