Winchester was still the Capital of Anglo-Saxon England during Alfred's reign, it is only until the 12th Century, London ( Or Westminster) was made the Capital of England.

Alfred was the person who implemented the jury system of 12 people to decide someones guilt

So, finally the leader and the great from the House of Wessex has been found, doubt-able yet though. However, the legacy of this English king who first united England under one rule remains a hallmark in all the line of English monarchs.

An evocative piece, especially with the Gregorian Chant in background. Alfred was a great man, certainly a vitally-important figure from Dark Age Britain. Seems strange how the mythical Arthur became the preeminent symbol of Britain when Alfred, though a later figure, was a man of actual documented history, who accomplished truly important things for the future of the country.

I just came here after "The Last Kingdom" show. He laid the foundation of England in a strategic manner.. Being an Indian I am really inspired from his negotiations and peace deal. Very strategic and calculative.

I remember King Alfred in Ireland, I mean the actor David Hemmings, filmed the movie in Ireland in 1968. Later succumbed in Romania at age 62...Carpe diem + time makes ghosts of us all + our sojourn in the sun may be fleeting 🔔💀🌻

I'm glad he remains found, and wasn't found to be unfound at some point.

Not only that, but he hrought together a divided Britain that was up until then seperated by multiple kingdoms. He wamted a united country of Amglo-Saxons. Even as an American i recognize the greatness of this man.

Happy to see that CNN reported on something informative. They took time out of their busy 24/7 schedule of reporting on how white people are racist to give us this story.

Here was a king who stood in the shieldwall with his men, learned from his various mistakes, led an underground resistance of sorts, restored Christianity in England, turned a number of his enemies into friends, drove back the pagan viking tides of rape and pillage and human sacrifice, restored literacy and a love of learning, revolutionized the military and inadvertently also revolutionized the infrastructure, established a proper (Christian) legal code, and, most importantly of all perhaps, was faithful to his God and faithful to his people and country. Here is a man who even to this day is a blessed mark on the term “monarch” and absolutely earned the title of “the Great”.

Truly remarkable ruler and millitary commander who fought Vikings and drove them away from English soil. He brought the much needed stability and peace to England. He deserves much more credit. May his soul rest in peace.

Alfred was not the first king of the English. His grandson Ethelstan would become the first king of England.

I doubt they'll find anything that can conclusively say is him, the bones have been disturbed to many times, not sure i want them poking about with fragments of his bones anyway .

Sadly, the loss of Alfred's body/bones is one example among many of carelessly disrupted or scattered burials which resulted from King Henry VIII's dissolution of the Catholic monasteries in the 1530s.

Updated for 2020: “We at CNN apologize for the pain this video has caused. We shouldn’t have presented an important figure in western civilization and European history in such a positive light without providing proper context; to do so ignores the pain of people of color and erases their experiences. Alfred the Great wielded weapons, which cannot be excused by pointing out that we live in a different era. Carrying a sword was unacceptable then and it is unacceptable now. There is also no evidence that Alfred ever seriously pursued any ethnic or religious diversity in his court, and his ministers were unfortunately all white, upholding the systemically racist power structure we are still struggling with today. Again, we apologize, and will strive to do better in the future. Please tune in for our first step in this process next Wednesday at 9 pm, when we present our newest investigative report that proves the early Britons were actually Muslim, and that Merlin was a Black man.”
