Who was Alfred the Great? Alfred was one of England's greatest kings and the only King to ever be granted the moniker "The Great: having had such a massive impact on English history and culture. He is till celebrated today and his legacy has endured through the centuries thanks to his many contributions.

What I love about Alfred is that he was both a scolar and a warrior king. He also suffered some kind if life long illness and still got up everyday to do his duty. A real English hero!

Yeah, the tv show, The Last Kingdom is definitely the better of the two. But Last Kingdom is a deeply underrated show compared to Vikings which is a bit overrated and more fantasy than historical epic. Cheers.

Having made a rather cynical response, I also wonder why there's a whole set of Alfred essays on YouTube in the last year or two. Maybe it's a yearning for leadership of his quality, intelligence, diligence, servant attitude, all round huge almost mythical and, at least superficially, almost flawless character and achievement in every field of kingship and governance. Besides Alfred, our current leaders are corrupt self-seeking, ethics-free rubbish whom we, collectively, vote in to control our countries - which says something rather bad about us as voters

He was great. But one of many men who changed English history. Perfectly reasonable to call him the founder of England. But not ''The Man..." which implies that he was the only man to change English history. William of Normandy undid almost all of Alfred's legacy. Tostig & Hardrada changed it because they diverted Harold from the south coast so they were exhausted before fighting William. Henry VII. And so on. And how do you change history? History is analysis of past events to say how we got to where we are. He didn't go back in time like Doctor Who and take the cakes off the griddle before they burnt! Maybe there is an alternate universe time line where he got stuck in the marshes and never got to lead a fight back against the Vikings but that's for theoretical physicists to work on
