I went on the Shanghai metro in 2018, and I was astounded. The network was so vast and deep down, you could take journeys of escalators going down or up, especially in an interchange station. Thousands would be on their phones because wifi was already widespread underground. Everything was so seemless and in order, and was very cheap. I’ve travelled on the Shanghai maglev and China’s high speed rail system. It is world class! The ‘authoritarian’ government, as the West LOVES to describe China’s CPC is very effective and made up of intelligent and highly educated political leaders.China is allot more modern and developed than I expected! Our media in the West always tells us China is collapsing.

I left my Back Pack at the Overhead Shelf during a Bullet Train Ride when I was in Hunan in April, the Train just wheezed off before I could React.
The Station Officer told me to Call 12306 to Report.
They found my bag at My Seat, handed out at A Couple of Station from where I was (at least 200km away I guess with the Train's Speed), and handed over to the Next Train heading opposite towards my Direction.
I went for A Roast Pork Supper nearby, slightly over 2 hours later, I got my back pack back with my passport and CNY 1760 (the Officer told me as I had no clue how much I had) in it.
Speechless over the Chinese Efficiency.

in Singapore we have tons and tons of security cameras as deterence for people to commiy crime because you cant get away with it. these cameras are there to keep you safe in the day and even at night, something most westerners do not have the luxury of...feeling safe on the streets.

THe cameras are not there to monitor every single person, they are there to record everything in case there's an incident, then it can be reviewed. With the amount of people moving around it would be impossible to monitor individuals.

CCTVs everywhere is a must for a secure and accountable society, those who are against it are probably not interested at all in obeying basic rules and laws in public areas.

China has 9 of the 10 largest subway systems in the world.
In shanghai，20 lines and more than 500 stations are already in operation.
Shanghai’s subway operating mileage has exceeded 830 kilometers.
There are another 45 cities get their own subway systems in mainland.
All the data is constantly being updated, and it is very likely that it will be out of date by the time you find it.

1994 I was still a teenager and the city of Toronto repurposed the Scarborough Subway extension, I was stoked. Fast forward 30 years. I am in my 40s now, married and kids. Yet the Scarborough subway extension turned Light rail above ground instead has just started construction about a year ago. Talk about a life time!!

It's all the bureaucracy, red tape and all the political B.S. at the end it's the people of Toronto who suffer.

Here people's taxes are used to subsidize public transportation. in the west people's taxes are used for wars in other countries, $150B++ for Ukraine alone 😅😅😅

The reason that public transportation charge ridilously affordable prices is because these services are subsidized by the government and the government does not deem it as a "loss" as private company does, instead it consider it as a necessary price to pay for overall economy and public good.
