We had the most amazing time in China and share our experience with the world. Media and news representations don't always capture the reality, emphasizing the importance of firsthand exploration. We highly recommend everyone to visit atleast once to experience the rich culture, savor the cuisine, and witness the country for what it truly is ❤

Glad you came to see China yourself. I've lived here for many years, and been visiting for even longer. Pretty much all of the major cities throughout China are as clean, easy and safe as Shanghai.

White Aussie male here. Went to China and visited many cities. I never felt so safe being in a Country. I could go anywhere, any time of the day, leave my things on a table and order my food, and my things were still there. I have China's Police help me, and walked me, to the nearest public toilet at a mall (they carry no guns and they are Civic Police, not Militia Police like in USA). The people were so friendly, and many bailed me out when I had communication issues (I know very little Mandarin). The Cities in China are clean and their transportation system is out of this world. I could not get over how quiet the traffic in the cities were (in comparison to Western Cities traffic) because they have a lot of Electric Cars, compared to our Combustion Cars.
Went to USA and visited many cities. I was constantly concerned. I was warned by many not to go to certain suburbs in the Cities. The Cities were dirty. Too many obese and angry people, and they carry guns (40, 000 gun related deaths EVERY YEAR in USA, virtually zero gun related deaths EVERY YEAR in all other developed countries in the world). Their Police wear military utility belts full of arsenals. I would not venture out of any city after midnight. I saw too many people living in the streets and neglected. Their Civic Infrastructures and Civic Services needed a lot of repairs/replacements or addition constructions were required. USA is very much geared towards the good life of the Billionaires (1% own 90% of the Country's wealth). China is very much geared towards supplying a good Middle Class life style for ALL its citizens - and they still have more BILLIONAIRES living in China than USA. Beijing has more billionaires living there than those in New York City. Also, out of the top 10 cities where billionaires choose to live, 6 are in China, and only 2 are in USA.

You state your experience is only based on Shanghai, take it from a US expat in China for 14 years. It's the same throughout China, I have been west to east and north to south. It's an amazing country. So glad you two enjoyed and was able to see the real China and not the fake western media version.

Colombian living in Guangzhou here. I feel so sorry for all the prejudices and misconceptions people have about China that are actually a reflection of what’s really happening in their own countries.

I kindly suggest you for your next trip to China to visit Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong which are very close to each other.

And my suggestion for everyone out there is: TURN OFF CORPORATE MEDIA!

Good morning too. I have this encountered and would like to share.
I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US.
We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting, But I was surprised of what they told me. They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere, every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason.
All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad.

the bad rap china gets is totally undeserved. I had the same preconceived notions when I visited in 2018, also based on US media. I was blown away when I got there, because it wasn't anything like what I heard/thought. since then, I've taken everything I hear about foreign people/places with a huge amount of skepticism.

Still smiling after leaving China! It's a great sign. Happy New year guys!
As long as you are saying nice, but true things about China. Then, the China haters won't stop coming for you guys.

From Singapore and thought my country was one of the, if not the most advanced, in Asia. Worked and lived in Shanghai for 5 years. The speed with which they advance, the IT, the Fintech, the logistics, the convenience, the metropolis with old world charm, the soul. Granted, they have some faults here and there, but it's part of the magic. Miss it like crazy.

trust me, Other city is no different regarding openess and other social standard. China is actually more open than some so called domocracy countries, i know it is hard to believe it because of what western media describe China

I'm Malaysian Chinese, I read in both English and Chinese, media from both sides are very different.
Education too. I study world history and geography in school, while in the west, they focus on the country or region.
This gives young people very different perspectives about the world.
Sometimes, I have to reconsider what does it really mean by freedom. Freedom to knowledge and rights to truth are what we need too, don't they?

As a Chinese living in Australia for about 15 yrs, I've now already given up to convince people here around me that China is actually not that bad... They just don't really believe me and it's their loss anyway 😅

Your evaluation of China is so good! thank you all! Chinese society is developing too fast, and there are still many aspects that need time to change! We sincerely welcome you to visit us again. We don’t mind if you say something bad as long as it’s true.

I know many foreigners who sincerely feel sorry for Chinese people, because they are so 'suppressed'. This is very sad situation, and it gives you a glimpse of how powerful the impact of a false narrative can be.

Been living in China for 13 years and never once I felt monitored or unsafe.. Been everywhere in China, from their vast grassland and desert cities to their rainforest, mountainous and snowy cities.. Each city or perhaps province will totally give you different experience in terms of culinary cuisines and local culture not to mention the cities that are in the middle of nature.. Indeed a beautiful country to live in and I hope everyone in the world will have the chance or open minded enough to experience China firsthand. SUGGESTION: Do a proper tourist visa next time to you can visit a lot more. Beijing- Xian-Chengdu (Where I live now)- Chonqing, Yangshuo, Guilin, Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila. From Beijing you will be heading down to south west China. Do the last 5 cities in the list maybe in your last 2 weeks in China. I recommend a month of visit but that is really tight already with the given cities above. :) This will totally cover everything from different culture, tradation, nature and cuisine. Have fun with your travels.

Every country has its own way of living.

For me as a normal citizen, I do not need any gun or drugs. Camera is good for me as I don't commit any crimes. Thefts may feel differently but I feel safe with those cameras.

In certain countries you have freedom for drugs, guns, etc and social media telling lies.

In China, we have freedom to really enjoy our lives walking around at night without worrying about our safety in most places.

It's okay, just we are different and we have to respect each other.

You are a nice couple and you confirm what I hear from other bloggers, that China is the best country in the world to visit or work in. Safe, friendly helpful people, clean, good food and services at affordable prices.
Look forward to your next China visit. I am old aged person from Australia and cannot travel myself. I fell in love with China and am very angry how people get manipulated in western countries to hate China as many of your questions show.
