They're looked at as more skilled because the lack of physicality allows them to do more. More space allows more handling. No hand check, big men clogging the paint, no big men like Mutumbo, Mourning, the Admiral, Hakeem, and etc. No physicality makes it appear that way, but truthfully they are not more skilled. At all

The idea of NBA player being more skilled today baffles me.
Look at guys like Luka and Jokic, they are way less athletic than the average player in their position, yet they're MUCH better than the average player because they actually have fundamentals.
All NBA players know how to do today is shoot 3s, set illegal screens and milk fouls

Players today are good at running north to south and shooting the 3 ball. The ability to develop a mid range, establish footwork, postup mooves, man on man defense, off ball defense is all being ignored. All AAU cares about is high scoring and flashy highlights

I'm going with Kobe's take here, being as he's in the top 5 most skilled players to ever do it.

This is the best segment you've done! I agree wholeheartedly! Somebody asked Charles Barkley what he thought about Blake Griffin a few years ago. He said he'd be great when he learns how to play basketball.

"The NBA is way more athletic now" but yet a guy like Luka is averaging 28-8-8 against all these super athletes but somehow a Larry Bird couldn't dominate in this era yea ok.

As a person watching the NBA since 1968, your comments on this subject are spot on.

Anthony Mason is my primary example of a hooper from back in the day who can play in any era big, strong, tenacious, good hands, soft touch, handles, pass, rebound, defend, and score. Put him on any team today and he fits in. Rip mase

I’d put Kevin Johnson or Mark Price’s skills up against most of today’s guards. And those are just point guards. I’d also add Mitch Richmond and Rod Strickland.

They're less skilled in this era running up and down shooting 3s breaking every rule in the book isn't more skilled u had to be creative and have moves to score back then now any tom dick and harry scores 20

I think people get style confused with skill nowadays so I agree with this video 👍🏾👍🏾

I definitely disagree that player are stronger these days. I've yet to see anyone look like Ben Wallace or David Robinson.

In the beginning I enjoyed JJs analysis, but I've realized that he is too emotionally invested to give objective analysis. He's too player friendly to do that. So is Beverley

Today's players are not more skilled they specialize in one area like he's a two way player he's a three point specialist also the rules of the game are vastly different such as the step back shot would have been called a travel you can carry the ball and they give yiu three or more steps on a layup

In my opinion AAU is good for getting exposure for recruiting but to Kobes point it doesn't teach them the Fundamentals

I’ve listened to Luka in an interview. I think it was with JJ if I’m not mistaken. He said it’s easier to score in the NBA than in Europe because of the rules. To combat that, Luka developed a game where he wasn’t needing to rely on athleticism he doesn’t necessarily have. Development of footwork, development of IQ, expansion of range, these are things you see from Luka. Not just him but Jokic, Embiid, Giannis, who are all international players. These are all guys who are in the NBA running for MVP at some points of the season. Going back to what Kobe said, guys today in America at the AAU level are only taught the importance of hesi, tween, splash. That’s a problem. It stops a persons game from becoming more refined and well rounded. I’ll say this about Kawhi. Thank God he was put where he was being traded from Indiana to San Antonio. Being around all those players like Duncan, Ginobli, Parker, few other international players, and coached by Pop where he would not let someone like Kawhi get stuck and limited.

Today's NBA there's no hand checking it's less physical you can't really touch him and hit them as hard without the referee calling and a lot of 3 pointers less defensive the nineties and early 2 thousands have more variety of players with different skill sets

NBA players today are definitely more skilled at whining and flopping though.
