Is YouTube About To Delete Your Favorite Channels?

Google announced a new policy change to their inactive accounts, which viewers believe will delete YouTube channels of creators who haven't logged in for the past 2 years. What does this mean for those classic YouTube videos from creators who disappeared from the platform? What about creators who passed away?

Messing with a deceased person’s YouTube account is a line that YouTube should never cross. It disrespects the person’s memory and angers their fans and families.

If this really happens, then that’s the stupidest thing Google has ever thought of

For those who have time, start archiving everything before they gone forever. This is the new era for YouTube I guess.

Just to be safe, people should start archiving the content of inactive / deceased YouTubers. That way if Google does go through with deleting those accounts, it won’t be as devastating as it would be.

Thank goodness they're not deleting videos, but we all need to take this as a warning and start really preserving this stuff

Youtube contains too much nostalgia and pop culture, it's a real time capsule, they should not ruin the site again

To those dedicated to preserving internet history, thank you very much. I thought YouTube was turning into a dumpster fire while Susan was CEO. It seems like Mohan is just trying to make things worse. YouTube wasn't save just put under new management.

Honestly. I think it's time for content creators to step up and strike against YouTube and Google's nonsense. Susan Wojcicki and Neal Mohan have caused too much problems enough.

This is just the final nail to the coffin.

If this happens, we should sue Google and take all of it off the internet.

I’ve actually been saying for a while that we need another social media website where we can have a permanent archive of all those old YouTube videos, so that they won’t all just randomly get deleted and be lost forever.

Google has a history of just randomly shutting down apps, and although it seems very unlikely that they would shut down YouTube at any point in the next few decades, you never know what could happen. What if there’s a new app that actually gives YouTube some real competition and the majority of YouTubers and users all move to that new app? I guarantee that if it gets to the point where YouTube is no longer making Google one single cent of profit and is causing them to instead lose millions of dollars, they’ll just shut it down and every single video, live stream, community post, comment, etc. will all be permanently erased from existence.

A bit upset about this as there are loads of channels with older games on them that haven't been updated for years. Like finding games from my childhood.

Don’t ask Youtube, Twitter has seen far worse because I heard they’re going to delete inactive accounts within 30 days. I’m really concerned for the future and the state of preserving internet history for all of us to enjoy…

If this happens, then we'll lose so many rewatchable videos and channels, including the millions of views those videos had obtained. I don't want this to happen, man 😞

WE'VE GOT TO STOP THIS!!! GOOGLE HAS GONE TOO FAR!!!!

If this happens, then I might actually cry. Does google think they can delete so much memories? so much nostalgia? All these people’s hard work? I’m glad that it seems like their not going through with this, but it’s times like this that I’m thankful the way back machine exists.

I actually think this had to be done for a different reason: inactive subscribers. There’s a handful of top-subscribed YouTubers who have completely forgone the things that got them to the top and still get to sit on a mountain of subscribers even though only a minuscule fraction are actually watching. Removing inactive accounts would make the subscriber count a more accurate evaluation of a creator’s popularity.

I’m also certain that no account with videos that people are still watching will be deleted for being “inactive.” Google would be shooting itself in the foot to remove anything people still watch just because the creator isn’t making any more of it.

This is pretty dumb. Why not create a locking system? Lock down the account and channel for the time being and then give the user the option to unlock it when they’re going to use the channel again.

For those who did not watch the whole video or missed it, at around 2:01, the video says that a Youtube official went to Twitter to post that they have no plans of deleting inactive accounts that have posted videos, and the soonest they will be deleting accounts is December 2023. There is no need for mass panic (yet), although it may be wise to keep an ear out just in case they change their minds later.

... You cannot be serious. Not a lot of channels (at least ones I watch frequently) come to mind that haven't been active for over two years (at least not that I can remember right now), but there are definitely some I like to go back to. Whether it's creators who have passed away, lost interest in making content, or just haven't had the time or motivation to make content, I still love to go back to their channels. This can't happen. Please don't let this happen. So many videos will be lost. How much of Youtube's history will be lost with this? Videos that some creators have left behind as their legacy, all gone. I can't believe this dude. Something has to change

"Inactive accounts are a security risk"

...wouldn't they only be a security risk if they went active again?
