The Magnificent Seven is a 1960 American Western film directed by John Sturges and starring Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, and Steve McQueen.
The supporting cast features Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz.

The film is an Old West-style remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. Brynner, McQueen, Bronson, Vaughn, Dexter, Coburn, and Buchholz portray the title characters, a group of seven gunfighters hired to protect a small village in Mexico from a group of marauding bandits (whose leader is played by Wallach).

The film's musical score was composed by Elmer Bernstein.
In 2013, the film was selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

I listened to a two hour radio interview James Coburn gave not long before he died. He said he had seen _Seven Samurai_ when it first got to America, and when the casting call went out for this part, including a scene description, Coburn found Hollywood's top stunt knife thrower and had him coach him the entire weekend. While utterly implausible that a thrown knife of that size would be anything like a man-stopper, Coburn made it work, in not just his icy persona, but just how smooth and professional he made it seem.

You have to give credit to Robert Wilke the bad guy. He appeared in hundreds of TV and movie roles. Most always as the villain. Without villains, you do not have a movie. Great actor who never got much acclaim.

Thanks for this. I love this movie. These guys are the epitome of cool. I love Coburn in this scene, the way he is so completely nonreactive . . . until he needs to be. When the guy says, "Look at me!" and he tilts his hat up with one finger, you get the impression he WAS looking at him already-- THROUGH his hat brim no less. At 1:04 when he rises it's like when a king cobra lifts up before striking.

He does more acting with his body language in this scene than a lot of people do in their whole career. At 2:36 when the guy kicks his leg he tenses, but as soon as the guy just insults him ("You're a liar.") he pulls his hat down 2:40 again. Insult = not a threat.

Then the guy has to keep going, almost comically when he says, "You're a COWARD and a liar, " like he's double dog daring him or something.

James Coburn is very "zen" like in this scene. Only a man who COMPLETELY understands what he is capable of can exude such calm and confidence when challenged.

Rememory Spell; We were watching this the first time it came on TV, when James Coburn rose up that last time Papa D. said "A-Oh". We were kids, but everybody in the house knew ole boy was about to be over with.

One has to wonder how a character as stupid as the loudmouthed gunman managed to reach middle age.
