CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Henry (Val Avery) tries to convince the hearse driver to bury the dead man. Chris Adams (Yul Brynner) volunteers to drive the hearse to Boot Hill.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954) is westernized as The Magnificent Seven. Yul Brynner plays Chris, a mercenary hired to protect a Mexican farming village from its annual invasion by bandit Calvera (Eli Wallach). As Elmer Bernstein's unforgettable theme music (later immortalized as the "Marlboro Man" leitmotif) blasts away in the background, Chris rounds up six fellow soldiers of fortune to help him form a united front against the bandits. The remaining "magnificent six" are played by Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, and (the one that everybody forgets) Brad Dexter. Though jam-packed with action, William Roberts's screenplay pauses long enough to flesh out each of its characters, allowing the audience to pick their own favorites. The Magnificent Seven was followed by three sequels, not to mention dozens of imitations.

The little detail of Yul Brynner untying his pistol holster so it will sit upright and allow him to draw faster while seated is perfect!

Steve McQueen always added his unique touch; little things that appear subtle but are exquisite. Many actors would take the shotgun and just sit down on the hearse. McQueen receives it broken, shakes the cartridge to hear the shot, chambers and then he's ready to go. He portrays a man who is a professional at what he does. Love it.

This is how you introduce characters while framing them with memorable actors and lines. They aren't even the focus of the scene and it's still classic.

"I want him buried--*you* want him buried--and if he could sit up and talk, he'd second the motion!"  Dang, I love this movie.

"Never rode shotgun on a hearse before."  Damn, I love this movie.

"There's nothing up there but cut-throats, murders and derelict old bar flies and if they ever felt exclusive, brother they're past it now!" I love the dialog in this movie.

This scene exemplified compassion and community. Think about it: This all started because a traveling salesman's act of charity to a man he never knew. When the situation comes out, the first thing that happens is Chris volunteering to drive. Without much else to say, Vin decides to join him and asks the coachman if he could borrow his shotgun. The coachman happily lends it over with two shells, then both he and the driver put up insurance money to see the effort through.

These guys didn't have to have tons of makeup, million dollar lighting or sophisticated weaponry to look cool. They just defined coolness!

This movie really set another standard for great western movies and is in my TOP 10 of all time. When I was in college (Class of '70) and showed movies in the student center, the two most requested movies in Finals Week were "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape" - double hits of Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn.

It might be controversial to say, but the undertaker's got some of the best lines in the whole film.

Yul was The Man of his short time, hands down. Underappreciated today. Too bad.

When it comes to getting his he'd blown off, he's down right bigoted!' This film has some fantastic dialogue in the scene alone. Witty, pointed and realistic.

One of the best musical scores in movie history.

Saw this on the big screen when it premiered in '60. The audience loved it, but the critics hated it. Critics are idiots.

The other salesman is the father of Kurt Russell.
