Retired Commo NCO here. My very strong commo recommendation:

TYT MD-390 plus. Perfect civilian tactical radio - water/dust IP67 rated. It's also Part 90 certified - which means AES-256 encryption capabilities (if you take the time to learn how to do it). They can also be programmed with GMRS and MURS freqs - which makes them compatible with cheap bubble pack Walmart radios. Big Bonus: they are pretty affordable.

Edit: they also push 10 watts - double the power of a Baofeng. However, you should strive to limit power to minimum necessary.

Edit 2: stop trying to get your hands on a PRC-152 or Motorola. They will be mostly useless to you in an emergency situation - particularly since you won't have the ability to generate or load your own keys. Motorolas are only going to be crypto compatible with other motorolas (and they are stupid expensive). On top of that, Motorola loads the crypto keys...so they're already "compromised".

Love this brother! One thing I CANNOT emphasize enough is multiple means to get clean water.

If people do bail out, lack of water will kill unbelievably quick.

I’d recommend a primary, secondary, and tertiary means to purify.

I once lived in an EXTREMELY rural area of West Virginia. Mud for so called roads. No police. No hospital in the entire county. No trash pick up. No mail delivery. Um, you'd have to see it to believe it could exist in the 21st century. I lived there. Anyway, I'm not sure I'd feel too safe there if the balloon goes up. Those people steal like crazy. One guy back there was married to his cousin and his first 2 children died as infants because they were so inbred. Some other guy was paying a 13 year old girl for bj's. One guy kept doing insurance scams by buying trailers for $400 and insuring them for $10, 000 and burning them down himself. Maybe it would be better there, than in Manhattan, but not by much.

Great review of the essentials but a warning to those who are planning to utilize rural areas after leaving the cities…many of the communities in these regions are already prepared, know their neighbors and have a plan for these sorts of events. If you come up the one road that accesses our neighborhood you WILL be challenged and asked to leave politely. There won’t be a second request. In those circumstances it’s suicidal to bring a 12th person into a 10 person life boat.

Excellent presentation and advice. I would like to add a few suggestions. Water placed in copper containers will kill all bacteria in eight hours. Plantain is an extremely common plant that was used by Roman soldiers to treat wounds and prevent infection. Dandelion, both root and herb, can be made into a tea to treat heart conditions. Poisonous snakebite can be successfully treated with an electric shock, such as a stun gun or small cattle prod. Also, expanded metal shutters over windows and glass doors will keep out molotovs and explosives. And the number one food source in wooded areas is acorns.
