I'm ethnically Chinese from SEA, went to lunch with mainland Chinese foreign students (2nd generation rich rich) and they asked why I finished all the food in my plate since I didn't look poor. They said finishing all food in the plate is a sign of poverty. It shows you have to eat everything bcs you don't know when you're gonna have a meal again. They always leave some food on their plate to show they're not poor. Yea that was the first and last time I went to eat with them lol

I went to Stanford 15 years ago and the rich kids there were so low-key, it took me years to find out that some of my friends had billionaire parents.

Harvard is one of those schools you have huge wealth gaps between students. On 2011 My cousin, son of a normal nyc taxi driver graduated from Harvard, got in on his merit and high sat scores on a full ride. He said many of his classmates would have access to the extremely successful CEOs, politicians . But worse of it all he had many classmates who had all their work done for them. Like their papers were written by a smart kid they didn’t mind paying $500 to $1000 . Sure it’s still the same

I don’t care how rich I get, I’m never raising my children like this.

My bro went to Wharton for his MBA. He messaged me one day to say he was the only person sitting at the table in his study group whose father wasn’t an oil or mining executive.

I didn’t attend Harvard but I did attend another private school with a decently large “rich kid” demographic and it’s honestly such a trip to interact with “the casually rich but not famous”. You’ll definitely get your horror stories - I knew a guy that spilled coke in his Audi and got a new car by the end of the week because it was “ruined” but you’ll mostly encounter pretty decent, humble seeming people that inadvertently display that they’re just a little….out of touch. Things like panicking over having hundreds to thousands of extra campus currency they have to spend by the last day of class because they/their parents didn’t realize it doesn’t just rollover or telling you that something like renting a scooter is really affordable and then giving a figure of $1000+ a WEEK

I had a rich friend who threw away my dishes once after eating at my house. I pulled his plate of the trash and said wtf. He had no concept of washing and reusing dishwear and thought ALL dishes were single use.

And most of those people are probably going to be future politicians and company owners, and we are surprised why poverty is getting worse year by year.

I used to live with a Chinese exchange student. She was nice and we got along well, but didn’t understand why I had to have a part time job and had to pay for my own food, rent etc. and would always ask why my parents couldn’t just pay it for me. I also remember her telling me that her family wasn’t that rich because her dad ‘only owned a few hospitals’, and that they would ‘only give her 60k allowance at the start of every year.’

So in case you're wondering why nobody has any compassion and a stick of deodorant costs $13, it's because people this out of touch with reality are calling the shots.

I went to a southern, private WASP school for university. I had a classmate who came from an affluent background and had no clue what food stamps were. He and our English professor had a 20 minute discussion on food stamps and financial aid because the classmate literally had no clue what these things were and he genuinely wanted to know what these programs were because he felt uninformed. My professor on the other hand chastised him for the social/financial background he came from. But he genuinely was the most down to earth classmate I had at that university compared to other peers. I found myself feeling uncomfortable by the lack of home training people had in my university. The housekeeping staff had to put signs up to tell students not to defecate in the showers and we had to attend schools meetings about students threatening service providers and campus police. Having money does not buy you class.

Harvard is the definition of a legacy school. During my time there, most of the kids there were super rich and way pampered!

A friend of my ex went to Cambridge. One day, one of her housemates saw her making toast, by herself. Her nickname became “Toast Girl” for four years
