I was at the Leeds game. The part of the story most people miss is that Dia actually HIT THE POST in that game. I remember saying to my cousin at the game "that was a good start". Imagine how much (even) more amazing this story could have been if that shot had gone in. We thought he must be injured to be taken off but that's because we were watching where the ball went, not what Dia himself was doing. By the way that fan song "he's a liar" is from Gateshead fans, he joined them afterwards.

Want know a funny fact? Dia actually made it into one of the ACTUA SOCCER games on PS1 with Southampton. I believe it was the third game.

Ali Dia's son though, is a professional player. He's currently at Ayutthaya FC, in Thai League 2.

To be fair to Ali, the PL never got to see me play....

Just for info Matt le tissier wasn't a forward he was an attacking midfielder which makes his tally of 209 goals even more impressive and he was the first midfielder to score 100 goals

You earned yourself a sub. This was an amazing telling of a story i was familiar with, sprinkled with bits of knowledge i was not familiar with! I was thinking about this the other day, so stumbling upon your video was great!

Love this episode. Can’t believe that it actually happened😂. Good on him to get to the prem with no talent. 😂

I don’t know, maybe he wasn’t as bad as people say he was. He was able to play 5th tier football in France and in the video at 5:40 why did the coach say that about him? And yet after seeing him in training they still decided to give him playing time in a Premier League match. 🤔

He almost scored. Anyone who does that on their short debut is not the worse player.

Just to point out it was at the Dell not St Marys.

Anthony is the certified worst premier league of all time. Dia couldn’t have been that bad if he actually played football in France and Germany etc.

As a Newcastle fan, I can't stand Souness. Destroyed Bobby Robson's team out of pure ego. Not to mention his corrupt purchase of Boumsong from Rangers.

We might never have ended up with Mike Ashley as owner had we appointed someone more capable of replacing Bobby Robson... or better still, kept Robson another season or two.

I wonder if the film of the full match will ever be shown? Then we can draw our own conclusions

I wouldn't judge Souness on his manager career...he got rid of the LFC bootroom, where all the great managers came from. He tore it down so even though he's a Reds legend....he did a lot of harm as Liverpool manager!
I wish the DFB would go back to the green 2nd shirt...I love it!

I think you will find that every club in England had scouts decades before this happened, Premier league teams would have had a network of scouts. Also Le Tissier wasn't a striker.

Nearly scored if I recall properly in that 50 odd mins of fame for the saints

The game wasnt at St Marys. That stadium opened in 2001. The match was at The Dell.

If this guy played in the 5th tier of French football he simply can't be as bad as they are making out. I know top amateurs and Jr strikers that are obviously nowhere near Primer league but they wouldn't look like fools that couldn't kick a ball.

Thing is, he almost scored. Imagine if he did.
