Consider a video on luggage and hotel rooms. My first time in Osaka, I made the mistake of booking a Business hotel next to the train station. I had a large suitcase. The room was so small and narrow that I had to open the suitcase outside my room in the hallway

We got lucky on Peach. They didn't weigh the bags. My 22" roll aboard is 30 lbs. My backpack is over 10 lbs. Whew! We were fully prepared to pay to check it, but wanted to keep it with us. Got lucky!

My wife and I bring only one medium size, mostly empty North Face base camp bag as carry-on and wear one set of athletic outfit and buy what we need when we get there. (We bring a few more items when we do road trips in the States.)

On my trip in the Fall of 2023 (November, December, for four weeks), I took a rolling duffle case that is just a bit too big for airplane carry on. On the plane, I took a small day bag and a very small camera bag. If for some reason I lost the duffle case, I had a change of clothes and all my electronics with me.

It was easy to travel with this luggage while in Japan because I used Yamato transport to get my large case to my hotel (except from the airport on arrival - I treated myself to a cab). Yamato transport is a life saver. I wish that this service was available in Europe.

Overall, I have found Japan to be a relatively easy place to travel. The only snag I encountered was in getting from my hotel in Takayama to Tokyo. The hotel did not offer a forwarding service although it was available from a local convenience store. It was a fairly new hotel and it had not sorted out all the kinks yet and perhaps Takayama has a smaller volume of tourists. It certainly seemed that way when I was there in December of 2023.

Thanks for these helpful videos! I am headed there to race in September (an Ironman triathlon). I like to travel light on vacation, but it is hard to travel light with all the triathlon gear! I was in Japan during the summers long ago (1992 and 1993) and loved it there. Looking forward to returning!

Back in 2019 before they had the oversized luggage rule, we had put our luggage at the back behind the seats. Some European tourists came into the shinkansen at a few stops after us.. removed our suitcases and put theirs in.. and left our suitcases out in the hallway where the doors to the train was.. I was coming back from the bathroom and noticed my suitcase in front of the train doors...
I was furious... I almost did the same thing to them but I didn't want to block the door for the other passengers.. I tried to put my suitcase back and even arranged theirs so it fit..
They also missed their stop And panicked like chicken with their heads cut off trying to drag their suit cases out of the shinkansen..

We were travelling on the Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Kyoto in a green carriage and I just shoved my oversized suit case in the reserve area as we were like the only people in that carriage. A pissed off conductor came along and told me to move it 15 minutes into the trip. We knew nothing about the reserved bag area as we bought our tickets online from overseas before our trip and had them delivered to our hotel in Hiroshima. The company that sends bags ahead for you won’t deliver it until the next day so it’s sort of useless

Thank you for the guide! very useful and helpful!

Would you recommend someone to fly in Japan with just a backpack and a small carry on suitcase? Then buy a check in luggage at the market. We want to travel light as possible.
