The advice in this video is to help players develop simple but fundamentally sound swings to allow you to control the ball, rally, have fun, and develop essential skills. This forehand technique allows you to take it to the next level, adding a bigger swing and more racket speed as needed.

This is the most fundamental and indispensable FH vid from all the fundamental and indispensable FH vids I’ve ever managed to watch. As simple as that. Amen 🙏

Tennis is a difficult sport and takes a long time to develop a smooth and effortless strokes, many just can't wait for that development and end up playing a difficult and hurtful game to themselves. What you're showing is a great idea, but most just don't have that patience unfortunately! Still, love to see you have the patience to show what many should do! Good coach

Well said at 2:24 “rather than having to get the racquet right behind the ball we know where it’s going to be”. Nice connection between receiving skills and competence with bigger/faster loops - you hit the nail on the head. Really important points in this video - nice one Tom

Hey Tom!

I'm makes the most sense to me. To get students to be able to play a little in the first lesson, we play tap to eachother. where we are taping the ball to eachother with in a space. when the student gets comfortable with taping, recieving and moving.... we do a tap then finish of the stroke....where the finish is exactly where you placed it. At the end of the lesson, we are sending and recieving over the net to eachother. I'll send a ball that makes them move and have to adjust within the rally. it seems like one of the most easy and natural ways to learn. It's fun and really improves both Recieving and sending skills.
I hope that made sense. lol
I think it's also important to not teach in small peices technically but in chunks. All of the "pat the dog" stuff doesnt promote what is natural to the student.

Your videos on the forehand are excellent. Could you do one on higher forehands above tbe waist and shoulder and even above the head?

thanks Tom! You've already done some very helpful serve videos. Can I be greedy and ask you for some comments or a video on the so'called "cartwheel" motion on the serve. It seems this cartwheel / shoulder-over-shoulder motion is sort of the core of the modern serve, but I wonder what could go wrong in learning or teaching it. Or I wonder if there is a way to know if it being done the most efficient way. Greetings from Kansas!

Thanks Tom. Do you have any advice for moving from the fairly vertical finish next to the head to a more lateral follow through, i.e. where the racket face is tilted down and facing in the general direction of the net through much of the finish?

Good reminder. I’m 1.5 years into first touching a racquet. I know I hurt myself by always going full throttle.
