Now that I see the map, I realized how complicated the war was. I was surprised to see no real invasion into North Vietnam. The South and Allies were forced into defending/retaking the south the entire time. Not only that, but majority of attacks came from Laos and Cambodia. A country which the USA couldn't just simply invade and gain ground, but instead dropped 1000s of bombs on. The enemy were locals living in the same neighborhood. There was no frontline basically. No ground to gain. Only ground to lose and try to retake. It's no wonder the Vietnamese won. They literally used our rules and politics against the US and Allies - well done.

As a Vietnamese I love this animation as it tells exactly what is happening in south Vietnam. Although the South suffer fewer casualties if you look at the map it actually shows how messed up the situation is for them.

Note that in the Tet offensive, the decisive battle which won the war for the Vietnamese, the faction which suffered most was the Viet Cong. So the people who sacrificed most to ensure America's defeat were South Vietnamese, the very people for whom America claimed to be fighting.
