I’ve been doing it for over 30 years and I will say she’s absolutely correct. Once your of age, you must be your own parent and handle yourself accordingly. If your parents didn’t teach you anything, find an older person who’s life seems easier and happier. Learn from that person.

You have to force yourself to work because unless you do, somebody won't get rich exploiting your labor.

That lesson should have come long before age 18. Skills, material goals, knowledge and even relationships all require work. If you are just learning that lesson at age 18, you are already years behind.
