Israel ruling: Reaction and analysis from Sky News correspondents

The world court ruling that Israel must act to prevent genocide in Gaza is "deeply uncomfortable" for Benjamin Netanyahu's government, says Sky News Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall.

The decision by judges at the International Court of Justice comes at an early stage in South Africa's case alleging that Israel's military action in its war with Hamas in Gaza is genocidal.

The court did not order Israel to end its offensive - but instead demanded that it does everything in its power to prevent acts of genocide.

The judge seemed to be speaking as if she was one of South Africa's lawyers considering she spent the majority of the time outlining Israel's genocidal intent & to then backtrack by giving Israel just a slap on the wrist!

The court had to be seen to being impartial. At the end of the day all the court has done is asked for Israel to submit reports as to how they are preventing genocide. Top win for Isarael

The Court ruled that evidence appears to reveal the “plausibility” of violations of Genocide as defined under International Law.

Although the various rulings are largely symbolic as the Court lacks any power to enforce its orders, this ruling is a political and public NIGHTMARE for Israel.

First, the Israelis helped build up a militant strain of Palestinian political Islam, in the form of Hamas and its Muslim Brotherhood precursors; then, the Israelis switched tack and tried to bomb, besiege, and blockade it out of existence.

ICJ ordered Russia to stop while it had far less casulties than Israel. But Israel was just ordered to watch out for their actions.
