Abstract:
The motivation for this research was to address the impact of staff turnover, at a rate of over 50%, in our most critical roles in operations. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to perform a root cause analysis that would lead to strategies and tactic, when applied, would lead to a reduction in staff turnover. Problem: The data collected from the root cause analysis, presented a number of outcomes, of which one was prominent. The problem was that the primary reason for over 53% of our voluntary turnover was that their pre-employment expectation of the role was different from what they actually experienced in the role, post-employment. Method: The strategy to reduce staff turnover began with the tactic of collecting empirical data from our voluntary staff turnover community. The analysis of that empirical data inspired a tactic that targeted 53% of our voluntary staff turner over. The method was to leverage the use of VR to simulate the actual experience of the role, prior to and/or early in a candidates’ employment. Results: Leveraging the empirical data and the use of VR technology helped reduce staff turnover by 18% in one year. Conclusion: Properly leveraging data, and emerging technology, such as VR, can provide your organization with an edge in building business intelligence in making evidence based decisions in areas of critical impact, such as staff turnover, that have both an opportunity cost and an actual cost to the bottom line.2020 MIT CDOIQ Symposium Session 11A - Lisa Ehrlinger
