The bz4X is Toyota's first all-electric model, and one of their collaborations with Subaru. We weren't sure we wanted to drive it, but ended up quite surprised by what it offers and where it shines. Of course, there are downsides too. Join us for a Test Drive!

A year ago I bought a bZ4X XLE AWD with the winter package and level 2 charging cable. It was $43k, not $53k. The limited edition has the 360 view and the funky rabbit ear spoilers which were not worth the extra money in my estimation.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting better mileage and efficiency than in the video but I drive in eco mode all the time.

Interesting it's compared to the Bolt in the video. I'm not sure they are in the same category in regard to build quality, reliability as well as passenger, cargo space and comfort.

Yes, it definitely is a commuter car and not a cross county vehicle even though I've watched videos of drivers who did use it for that. I chose the bZ4X because I wanted all the pluses of driving an EV without having to operate it with an instruction manual in my lap or driving it from a computer screen. (yes, I'm old) There is also the value variable to be considered and value can be subjective at times. The Bolt is a cheaper ev with slightly more range but it's also a thousand pounds lighter, smaller and not as comfortable. Range was not an issue for me. At the price I was willing to pay the Toyota easily won. If my budget were ten grand more I might have considered something else.

Hi Guys, in France, after a recent discount, the MSRP is 35000 euros. Coming from 53000 euros in January, what a bargain!

This is the equivalent of $69K in the UK. I have just collected my top spec AWD and it's lovely. I'm getting 3.8-4.1 miles/kWh which is great for this size of vehicle.

Hi, from Japan!! Japanese prefer to say letter “Z” as “Zetto”. Like BMW Z4 is “Zetto 4”. Nissan Z is “Nissan Zetto”. Dragon Ball Z is “Dragon Ball Zetto”. We love Zetto!! Ha ha. I always love to hear about exterior and interior from you two. Your explanation is very understandable as always. The greatest car channel more than any other car channel for me!!

I dunno how different the X Mode in this is to my Outback, but it made a difference when I drove in snow the first time. Tires slipped going up a hill, i turned on X mode and it figured it out, surprisingly. Made up for my inexperience.

This is a strategic, well thought out car to ensure that the media and toyota's investors stop bitching about no EVs as well as having a great justification for not making more EVs when the dollars lost is reporyed.

5:49 "If you get the $7500 thing..."
Yeah that's kinda the problem, the bZ4X and Solterra don't qualify for the $7500 Federal Incentive. It might also (at least in AWD form) be the slowest charging EV on the market, other than *maybe* the small-battery Nissan Leaf, which has an air cooled battery and uses Chademo. The HVAC is also weirdly inefficient for some reason.

I think Toyota still does the rolling 24 hour window of 2 DCFC sessions before DC charging is disabled? Ignoring the slow charging speeds, it pretty much eliminates this and the Solterra for road trips.

Great review video! You've got a new sub! I have the '24 XLE. It's my first EV and I love it! I haven't bought gas since April. I did the lease special which made the payment $300 a month with no money down. They have a similar lease deal now like other EV manufacturers. I have a few videos of my experience on my channel, and I hope to make great videos like yours one day!

BTW, in Canada we say ZED instead of ZEE as well.

I think you are reviewing last year's model. I have the awd XLE model and get about 200 in Seattle at 80% charge. The vehicle has averaged 4 miles/kwh on on a 72.8 kwh battery. Not sure if it's a heat thing in Texas, but a full charge here would easily get over 250. Also, my 2024 doesn't have colors on the temp display.

“Nissan leaf moment” 😂
On a more serious note, this is the type of car review I come to everyday driver for. I’m always happy to hear the delightful things, but more so of the ocean of reality you guys deliver.

The most concerning thing about this video, is that Paul might not have seen Star Wars???

If Subaru had made a good EV, I would be driving one now. I think the Rivian will be what I buy.

Toyota has a $15, 000 off lease deal right now even on the base XLE that makes this so worth it I got one and I love it. I have charging at home so range is a none issue for me. This vehicle is great for the regular everyday driver ha get it?

It's relatively expensive, has poor range, and looks like an Aztec. Don't think this is going to be a hit for Toyota.

In finland kia ev6 is allmost 20k euros more expensive than solterras. Solterra touring mid trim level prices start from 47ke now, when subaru allready lowered prices twice in this year.

Not a car that I have any interest in. It makes the Pontiac Aztek look good, so it’s got that going for it.

On another note, I think the big price differential between this and something like the bolt is that they’re not in the same class (imo), isn’t the bolt way smaller of a car? Still expensive but just wondering

Saying the weird part, Todd is almost unrecognizable and looks 15 years younger when his hair is pulled back and needs to get it cut short. There. I said it. Now back to cars everyone.
