2023 Toyota bZ4X AWD Full Review: Good Value, Slow Charger

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X all-electric SUV is the brand's first modern EV. It offers strong performance and a refined ride, but aspects of the bZ4X make you furrow your eyebrows and cock your head. For instance, with all-wheel drive, this SUV charges at a maximum rate of just 100 kilowatts, it has no glovebox and if you're of the taller persuasion, the steering wheel rim obscures the instrument cluster. We'll see if the good outweighs these annoyances as we pit it against competitors such as the Kia EV6, Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Mustang Mach-E.

It's really clear that Toyota wanted to prove themselves right when they say "consumers don't want electric cars". Making a car like this one is sure keep that pesky demand under control. The good news for Toyota is they won't have to make many of them and they can point their finger and say told you so, consumers hate EVs. My guess is they will make 70 more sandbagged and disappointing models just to make sure everyone gets the message.

There are some other issues with the bz4x suspension system too, which are not immediately apparent. If you run into a curb, this thing is gonna get messed up badly. I once run my bz4x by a fairly low curb, driving 27 mph, and that knocked the steering column off center. They had to re-alight three wheels, for only one of them touching the curb. I mean seriously! The charging issue is a real problem. It pulls much lower power than any car I happen to park next, and it limits the charging to two times a day, which ruined my first long trip, and made me hate this freaking car.

i live my bz4x fwd so far. Yes the ioniq5 or ev6 might charge faster, but are they going to still be on the road in 10 years? I will take Toyota quality over fast charging every time. I mean how often do you really take a long road trip ?

Have you actually tested the range? Ive tested the ev6 and it Fell well short of the manufacturers figure, even oussy footing it, its consumption wouldnt dip below 22kwh/100km 🤷‍♂️

You can also raise the driver seat to see the speedometer better.

Very nicely made video, In fact I bumped into EV pulse very recently. Was just wondering there was no coverage on the lack of a display that shows how many kWs are being pushed into the batteries while charging both in AC and DC chargers. The user interface is terrible for this car and you won't even notice if the car is really charging or not! If you are in an office charging space and didn't care to look after plugging the charger in say 10kW charger, there is no way to be informed, if the vehicle is really charging. Secondly, it turns off charging when the door is opened! Why on earth should that happen? I would like your opinion about that while you charged it in "electrify america" - liked that video as well. Thanks in advance for your comments

My 2009 Corolla dies at 125k miles. Was burning oil since 35k miles. Walnut Creek CA Toyota said it was fine my car was burning.5 quart every 1, 000 miles. I had factory warranty. I had dealership extended warranty. Toyota did nothing to help me and my Corolla was dead due to low compression at 125k miles. Don’t buy Toyota. Toyota has no honor.

He failed to mention KIA & Hyundai dealers add a Market Adjustment Fee of $5495 to their EV MSRPs., and Toyota does not.

How can Subaru's AWD version charge at 150KW while Toyota's AWD can only manage 100KW ? Deliberately gimped ?

Or, and I'm just throwing this out there, you could buy 2 Chevy Bolts for the price of this thing.

I feel sorry for electric  car  drivers and future  owners. They will simply  have to learn the hard way .. as I did. These things are a huge hassle and a outrageous expense  in the long run. Batteries  are very ... very expensive to replace ( thousands of dollars) ...  and make no mistake, you will be replacing them.

Are we living in 2015. Let me check my calendar? Oh wait, that is correct. It is still 2015 at Toyota headquarters 🫢
