Dear Mr. Godier,
Remember "Flatland" of Mr. Sagan's? Imagine a 3D ball travelling "through" flatland (2D world), it would appear to the inhabitants as a tiny dot when it first appears then slowly grows larger until it reaches max diameter & begins to shrink to nothing.
Now imagine a 4D ball travelling through our 3D reality. It would appear to be a tiny sphere growing larger until it reached its max 4D "diameter", then begin to shrink back to nothing.
Just a thought experiment I had a dream about once LOL.
