✅ Making Pollen Supplement Patties

Supplemental pollen feeding for honeybees is sometimes necessary to get them through weather related periods when brood rearing has started, but the foragers are unable to get out of the hive due to rain or cold.
It gets them over the hump so there is no loss of brood production during their major buildup period in early to late spring.
Pollen supplement is also good for mating nucleus colonies that may not have a high number of bees to both cover brood and forage. Food over their head can aid them in being successful developing new queens.

I go through step by step process of making the pollen supplement patty in bulk, which can then be frozen and thawed for later use.

I am in the process of getting the pollen sub tested for nutrition, I specifically wanted to see the amino acid profile for my pollen sub mix. I am attempting to send a few samples off to uw Madison to see what I could add to make a more complete supplement.

you can use ground soy Bean powder and put powdered egg mixed in it to make a powerful dry pollen the bees can use every warm day in winter and spring. 80 pound bag of ground soy beans cost me $26.00 dollars. enough to last a long time and they just love it. I even add a little powered sugar. I got the idea from the Canadian bee keeper that has 1, 500 hives

The lemon juice is an acid. It is used in canning also. The acid helps keep the bacteria away so it stays fresh. Vinegar does the same thing. I use apple vinegar.

The lemon is to prevent spoiling of the Patties, your welcome. Use it in sugar water also plus some Peppermint oil. They say pepermint also drives away black beatles

Add powered Jello to keep it soft and moist longer.. they don't like it hard and dry

citric acid works as lemon jus. no fermentation

If a small beekeep buys a 50 lb bag it will lose it''s freshness and nutrition after a few years. Even if you have to pay the high price for a small container it is still cheaper than replacing your hive.
