Thanks for the instruction, Mathew. I started using shellac in shop class back in the mid 60's and I remember it was difficult to use. We were taught to brush all the finishes on (varnish was the other), but the shellac was very difficult to get a good looking surface and I believe that was due to it not being cut enough. Many years went by before I tried it again, and the only reason I did was due to reading about how to cut it, and then it could be wiped or brushed on. I now use it on occasion, but I mostly use Arm R Seal these days.

to speed up the process of mixing the shellac, i use a wooden stick to break the flakes down in size before i add the liquid. i also find it much quicker and easier to use a good quality brush to apply. you wont get brush marks with a 2 or under cut.

Awesome information. Is there any advantage to grind the flakes in a coffee grinder first?? I’ve seen some people do and others don’t. I like your way of building up the finish. Thank you and take care
