This short video introduces you to the miracle finish: shellac! All natural, quick drying, and it has great protective qualities. Don't be afraid to try shellac. Mixing it is easy and application methods can be too.

It reminded me of the “mole” scene in Austin Powers

After watching this video, I used pre mixed shellac on my new oak face plywood bench top. I rolled and hand rubbed 2 good wet coats like I was using stain and then lightly sanded it with 220 once dryed well. I seems sealed up a bit and not to slick. I really like how it worked out.

5.5 minutes and the only thing I learned about shellac is that I need to be fast when applying it. Why is it "the miracle finish"? So I only apply the ine coat? Do I sand between coats? How many coats? Is it water resistant? Uv resistant? These are just some of the questions I would have expected to have answered.

Great video sir! I was under the impression thatI could just apply the shellac with the styrofoam brush or roller and it would come out smooth. Not the case! Think I'm going to let this fully cure then do what you instructed! Thanks for the help!

Gary has contributed so much to woodworking practice and technique. However, he completely “glosses” over the mixing process (pun intended). This is where the beginner will run into challenges.

Thank you for this info so many overlook Shellac including me but if I’m not mistaken and from what I see it seems to be more versatile than other premixed finishes also with guitar finishes and repairs it can probably have an aged look to help blend a repair

Thanks for this. I enjoy using shellac but in California we can’t get denatured alcohol. Please tell me the name of your solvent. Thanks.

Hi Gary,
I’m making big bass marimba bars (percussion instrument that will be struck thousands of times with a medium hard mallet and will vibrate like crazy over and over and over). Traditionally they finished with oils and waxs, though I want to experiment with other stuff. For my experiment phase—in order of best to worst—can you please suggest/brainstorm what you think might work out for coating/sealing wooden bars that will be taking a lot of inherent abuse? With all the beating and vibrating, for instance, might shellac or lacquer or polyurethane or wood hardener or an acrylic poor be too brittle, resulting in getting rattled and crushed to death and breaking apart microscopically over time? Also consider which finish would be the most scratch resistant. (Bars will be stored in stacks and slid against each other with the potential of dirt and sand bits in between. Thanks for brainstorming with me 👍🏻

I Modge Podged some paper photos on to wood and sprayed a gloss shellac over the modge podge…I don’t like the gloss and want to spray a matte finish over it. Can I just spray a matte clear over the gloss shellac?

I have two sewing machine cabinets that i want to bring back to life. I beleive they both have a shellac finish to them. One i am thinking of just trying to freshen-up with denatured alcohole and 0000 SW and re apply more shellac to it, so you are saying rub it out in between coats of shellac? if so can i do that with SW in stead of 2000 sand paper? My second cabinet i am thinking of stripping it so i can try and start fresh to give it a cherry look to it then top it with shellac, so question is, what product should i use to give it a cherry look before i top it with shellac?

I want to put a thick polish glossy shine on my home entrance it is very beautiful it goes from the floor to the ceiling and all the way over to the other side of the room and comes back down to the floor. Can you tell me how to do that . Can I do it without sanding? I want it to look like a finger nail polish shine very thick. What is your advice.

Good Video have you ever experimented with tinted Shellac’s I know years ago many people used White Pigmented Shellac’s as stain blockers to get a good finish coat of paint i also believe thats what they used for Wallpaper sizing as well

I am preparing to install hardwood butcher block counters. I've already mineral oiled twice. I now want to put on a protective finish. I want to protect against water and wine type staining. What do you suggest?
