Had a very similar experience. It was at nighttime on the highway. The shadows between the streetlights grew in intensity and even though I going 60 or 70 mph, it felt like I was going 140. I had both hands on the wheel like Rust did at the end of the video because it felt like the car was ready to fly off the road. No matter how far I traveled, it felt like the road kept stretching on and on. Swear it must be like getting sucked into a black hole

I think Rust was lying the officer about this specific moment being caused by neural damage. He was pounding a bottle of cough syrup before this, and the visuals line up exactly with a dextromethorphan--the active ingredient in otc syrup--high. His other visions are much more likely to fit with a brain damage or supernatural explanation though

In the first draft of the script, this scene was not actually "visions" but rather flashbacks, showing his wife and children during the accident. But luckily they changed it, that version was a bit overwhelmed cliche, unlike this one, which is a bit more mysterious and badass. Interesting that in the first draft of two episodes, Rust is not badass, but a weird guy that you can run into on street, just gone through some bad stuff. This version is a bit more badass, but not that supportive to the title of the show "True Detective" since first draft was kinda revolving around "is rust actually a cop? his files are sealed, he talks 'crazy shit'. maybe he is actually the murderer" concept was much more grounded.

So interesting how little discussion there is around Cohle's OBVIOUS place on the schizoid spectrum. Obviously he is not a full schizophrenic, but it feels like the people writing his character had the DSM open to "schizoid personality disorder" or "schizo-affective disorder" any time Cohle was in a scene. The weird introspection, hallucinations, past drug use, isolation, ambivalence ("i'm a cop i can do awful things with impunity" then proceeds to pay for his drugs like an upstanding man), the way he mumbles as he speaks, his difficulty connecting with others and his strange ways of trying to reach out... there's so much to it!

edit: "mainlining the secret truth of the universe" also truly sounds like a manic episode in some who is schizoid

reminds me of driving on the freeway when its wet/rainy /im tired, and all the light gets distorted from the raindrops on the windshield ( obvs please dont drive whilst youre tired its insanely dangerous and actually worse than alcohol )

Getting performances like this - I would have scrapped the idea of having ONLY 8 episodes with M.M. as Rustin Cohle. I would've done Season 2 and 3 with the original cast.
