"Why don't you like us, we saved you in WW2"

There. That attitude. That's why.

I (American) worked in England for three years and never had a problem. There was some good natured ribbing about some of the differences, and it went both ways. But truly enjoyed my time there, and made some very dear friends.

The key to this is 'How does he do in London' Newsflash, nobody does well in London, too many visitors think England is London and never visit the areas where normal people live.

The working class people I met in London were really cool to me (as an American).

We (my family included husband and 3 children) moved to london for 3 years and everyone we encountered were extremely welcoming and sociable toward us. Of course we put our best feet forward and thoroughly enjoyed experiencing everything British, sightseeing and participating in school events etc and people seemed to appreciate our efforts. Thats not to say that they werent sometimes confused by us.

Ms. Blunt was wrong about one thing. When my daughter moved to the UK, I was shocked by how kind and welcoming everyone was at the airport and in her neighborhood. The bus drivers weren’t very friendly, but everyone else was. I am disabled and use a cane and strangers would stop me in the street to ask if they could carry my groceries. They would do so even though I was going well out of their way. I even had a train engineers get out of his train in a small Scottish town to help me. I never expected that any where in the USA and I travel extensively for work in the northeast, southeast, Midwest, and California. In the USA, no one stops to help even when I’m struggling to walk while carrying something.

In the UK it is also traditionally considered ignorant and ill mannered not to remove your hat indoors. That is probably the real reason. Being loud mouthed in public places is another no no.

When I was in England, I had two (older) ladies come up to me asking for directions (I spoke, and they fell backwards) They mistook an American as a Brit - they were horrified!... I did try to direct them, but they would not have it. It was funny to me, sad, but funny

It’s all about character and being pleasant to be around no matter where you go.

Huge generalisation, but let’s keep going: Americans get the same welcome any visiter gets. It always helps to “go towards the host culture” a little, like always saying “Bonjour” first in France or covering up bare skin in Pakistan. In England (vs. Scotland, Wales, NI), moaning about the weather (solidarity) is a good conversation starter for residents and raving about the weather (pride) is a good conversation starter if you’re a visiter.

I lived in London for 3 yrs and never had issues with anyone, but i loved going to the countryside better, London is like all big cities loud, busy and full of people.there's so much more to see in England, they do think our personal space need when chatting is a bit odd though.

I would love to go and see the reaction to my southern accent.

I really love Emily Blunt's accent...!! How I wish to be able to speak / pronounce English like that..! I think it is so assertive in every syllable!❤

Why is that? I met some British runners at a running race, and they were very kind

Emily Blunt seems so well grounded and comfortable in her own skin. Yet, she was so good in The Devil Wears Prada. With her as a key supporting actress, it made the movie for me at least. I was so focused on her character.

My mom and dad passed away in 2021 and they used to watch Stephen Colbert all the time. Brings back wonderful memories of them watching it every evening. Sometimes my dad would be doing something else and my mother would holler that Steve Colbert was on. He would come in the living room and they would watch it together.

When i was in Dublin, myself and my gf from Rhode Island went to a nice restaurant and we were waiting for the host and talking with all the people in line. The host heard us. He seated a group of 6 British people in front of us. He was kinda snotty towards them and put them by the kitchen. He came running back up to us and Oh you girls are from America!! I love it i have family near Boston. He put us at the best table and comped a drink and came by to talk to us and said the Irish really dont like British people but love us. We were treated with so much love in Ireland. They LOVE Americans.

I've met several from the UK.
They were warm and loving.

Let's be honest, UK (especially Britain) and America have a very special relationship. It's complicated by history... one century we're enemies and then a couple centuries later, the best of pals. There's a lot of love there both ways that is made complex by pride and history and circumstances.
