A normal contract is 10% to 20% of the retail price. She would be at the middle at this time. So she would make about $2.50 per album. That would mean she got screwed after 8 million albums sold. But usually after 2 million albums the price is reduced.
Her album "Music Box" was released in 1993 was her 3rd album (this show was in 1994). Her first album sold 15 million, her second 8 million

he did get screwed, that's why he took a symbol as his new monicer, this is somewhat what happened to Taylor swift. the record lable had rights to the originals of her songs, so she did a stupid of her own because she still had ownership of the songs. so now companies go to her for the better quality version. screw record labels they are greedy corporations.

He's very very very very wrong - and he knows it. An artist does not see half of the album's retail price - no where close to that. Prince may have when he left the business side of music and sold everything himself - but he wasn't selling 1 million+ UNITS anymore. If an artist has a sweetheart deal they MAY see $1 PER COPY - tops. Now Mariah does have a good track record - but not every album of hers is a million+ seller. If she only sold around 400k copies (and she has) - $20 million is looking pretty sweet right about now.

Mariah doesn't write, produce, play an instrument, take publicity photos etc etc. Other people do and they have to get paid.
