Welcome to Norse Myths, Legends, and Folktales, where MyLinda Butterworth of Totally Stories interprets the written word for your listening pleasure. Today we learn about the heritage of Beowulf and how he came to the rescue of Hrothgar in ‘The Coming of Beowulf.'
In the days after, Heimdal, son of Odin was given a draught of Mimer's mead and became a child in human guise. He was placed into a ship along with many treasures and landed on the shores Scedeland, where he was raised by the chief. Heimdal had three earthly sons; from the line of Jarl, Scyld was born, and in his lineage came Beowulf. When Beowulf's father died, he reigned over the Scyldings and was honored and well-loved. His son Healfdene was also a great warrior and had four children, one of whom was Hrothgar, who also became a strong leader.
Hrothgar had a problem with a demon named Grendel, a man-eating monster who terrorized the surrounding areas and got pleasure out of coming into his hall, gathering up men, and devouring them. When Beowulf heard of the troubles, he took fourteen men and went to help out Hrothgar. What happens after he arrives? You will have to listen in to hear the whole story.
