Merkel and Putin to Discuss Afghanistan, Other Issues in Meeting

Aug.20 -- Angela Merkel is headed to Moscow. She’ll meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the last time as German Chancellor. The two will discuss Afghanistan and other “big” issues before she heads to Ukraine over the weekend. Bloomberg’s Maria Tadeo reports on “Bloomberg Markets: European Open.”

Merkel is turning gas from a political weapon to a commercial issue as she directly said. gas that arrives in Germany will be paid for as always. It goes into the EU gas network which stabilizes prices as several source disruptions don't disrupt supply significantly. The Baltics, Poland, Netherlands all have LNG ship import terminals for gas, so if pipeline suppliers don't play ball, gas will be imported. Big seasonal component to gas use, therefore in-nation gas storages are large allowing pipelines to supply at a consistent rate all year. The storages also buffer supply issues and price to customers.

Putins loving this. We've shown twice now America won't stop Russian interest, or uphold democratic values around the world. Crimea was taken for free. Afghanistan was given for free. Taiwan and Ukraine better hedge their bets America won't do shit either.
