I'm left handed and I dont let right handed players change my kit, they can learn to adapt.

I'm left handed and learned to play on a right handed kit from the start. That's how I've always played and it's funny because I can't play a left handed kit at all.

I naturally just started playing on my kit like this. I'm left handed. Self taught. I'm glad I did. It has forced me to get better with my right hand. I have never tried to do the mirror reverse set up. I also believe that playing open handed gives you a lot of freedom to do some interesting things. Plus, if you make it big, then your play style will make you all the more interesting of a player. When people see me play they always ask about how I play. It's not all that bad. haha.

I am not a drummer, but a bass player. You are absolutely right about people not liking their stuff moved. I don't see why they have such a problem with it, they should know their stuff well enough to put it back. Sounds superstitious if you ask me!

I've been playing lefty drums for 24 years, in a lefty setup. Gigged a bunch and never had a problem with righty kits at shows. Why? Because I brought my own kit. I can do 75% of everything I do left handed on a right handed kit, but I don't need to.

Thanks for posting this vid. I'm a lefty whose kit is a Mirror-Reverse to the "right-handed" kit. Fortunately for me, I don't play professionaly and don't need to ADJUST to a right-handed world.
Cheers, John

I'm right handed, but temped to set my kit of left and try playing open handed like that. I feel like it frees you to be able to do a lot more while you are riding the hats or ride. Carter can do all kinds of crazy tom licks and percussion stuff with his free hand while his hats are staying constant. It's an awesome thing.

Bobby jarzombek also plays open handed lefty. Incredible player. btw, to those lefties struggling with tom fills, your best bet is to hit an accent on the & of the count before the fill starts with your left hand, and then lead the tom roll with your right. You can also end a tom fill with a triplet to start back on time with the left on the hihat/ride.

Thanks for this upload you have saved me years of swapping my kit from left to right trying to figure out the best way to play.  This is the 1st time I've found a left handed open drummer!!

I'm a lefty and when I started playing, I didn't know there were lefty setups.I thought it was one way.then I found out but I can play cross or open handed, and double bass came easy.

i agree bro, playing a right kit when left handed can lead to major arthretic changes in the spine and hips, dont fold to the pressure of other drummers just because they want what is easiest for them, REP THA

I'm a lefty and I've been playing "open" going on more than 2 yrs. I tried having it switched and it feels foreign to me now. Plus like the guy says in the video, I'd rather not have to switch everything around just to play crossed. Lots of adjusting when it comes to rolls and fills but you need to be quick. I do get weird looks when I play because it's not everyday you see someone playing open/lefty.

this helped this lefty a lot, makes sense now, gonna continue with right hand set-up but left hand, dom.

As a lefty, I've found the crossover set up (1 mounted tom, 2 floor toms)to be way more efficient for us south paw drummers.

good vid! I am a left handed drummer, but started learning the right handed way as I never told my teacher I was left handed. most of the time I naturally switched the cross patten to just left on hi-hat and right on snare, it felt more comfortable and my drum teacher then understood I was left handed. the kit stayed the same and now I will never go back to the cross pattern as I have formed skills and patterns on each hands.

Thanks so much for this video... I thought about this today and this was the first video I watched.   I am lefty, my son is not... I'm looking to pick up a drum kit and guitar for the household and this logic makes perfect sense as far as a gig scenario is concerned, but also for setting up the kit at home, not changing it back and forth just makes sense.   I have a neighbor with 2-3 sets and I'm sure he'll help us out some, let us play with his a little until we get our own kit, etc...  Let me know if you'd help me out in deciding between 3 kits on my short list...  Thanks again for the video, I'm just going to learn to play righty, both with kit setup and on guitar.  Keep shining bro...

Mike Bordin plays just like that too! And I think he is a monster player/performer. And I also think that it is a very cool way to play... whith the hi-hat and the ride almost in the same position. Musicaly, it gives you a lot possibilities.
Cheers from Brazil!
