“Dishonest & Obnoxious!” Eric Weinstein DESTROYS String Theory

String theory has been hailed by many as the ultimate theory of everything. But after decades of intense research and debates, more and more people feel it is leading to a dead end. One very vocal critic of string theory is my colleague Eric Weinstein, and he blessed us with this short rant on the topic! Enjoy.

Garrett Lisi is an American theoretical physicist. Lisi works as an independent researcher without an academic position. He is a proponent of a balance between scientific research and enjoyment of the outdoors. He is known for "An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything," a paper proposing a unified field theory based on the E8 Lie group, combining particle physics with Einstein's theory of gravitation. The theory is incomplete and has unresolved problems.

Eric Weinstein is an American managing director of Thiel Capital, Peter Thiel's investment firm, a position he has held since 2015. Though not an academic physicist, he proposed a unified theory of physics in 2013. He and his brother Bret Weinstein coined the term Intellectual Dark Web to refer to an informal group of pundits. Eric is a vocal critic of modern academic hierarchies and advocates for advances in scientific theory over an emphasis on experimental results. We discuss funding, academic freedom, and theoretical vs experimental physics.

Totally agree with Eric. Neil DeGrasse recently said to Brian Greene to his face in Startalk: (on string theory) "either you're all wrong, or too stupid" (to either admit it or solve it). To which Brian replied: "a little of both ".
It would be legendary to see and hear both EW's going head to head on this, before Ed dies.

Eric mentions the political economy of the field, and that is something important and that many people forget about. The massive amount of support for basic science in the US is a result of the Manhattan Project. Heck, when I was a young physics student working at a paid job in High Energy Physics, my paychecks were from the Atomic Energy Commission. The idea was that, with the Manhattan Project, we had been able to harness basic science for military purposes. Then we were able to harness basic science for energy generation. That is what drives the funding. String theorists have put a dent in that. Bad, not good.

What this whole string theory thing reminds me of is Maxwell's first concept of electromagnetism envisioned a sort of mechanical substructure. He understood that this was probably not correct, but mechanics was what physicists understood, so it was easier to start with that.
