Earth observation is one of the major tasks for satellites and plays a crucial role in the climate change discussion. The high data volume collected by the satellite sensors needs to be transmitted to earth.

Optical satellite-ground links are expected to provide the required high-throughput data transmission in the future. However, channel disturbance due to cloud blockage or atmospheric turbulence can affect the link availability. Fraunhofer HHI is developing a link topology based on aperture diversity, in order to improve the link robustness.

This video shows recent experimental results obtained in the framework of an outdoor demo in Switzerland for the European VERTIGO project.
