This is one of the things I love about Only Connect, not only do they get former contestants back for the Christmas Specials, they can play a prank like this on them which the contestants take in the spirit of the prank, and after all that, it's still a perfectly answerable question.

god i adore the amount of people who absolutely hate this question. i love stuff like this so much. the quiz has no prize money so they just get to have weird questions and moments like this all the time. it is so fun to groan at a question like this, and it is SO much fun when you twig the answer. legitimately the best quiz show ever.

the average uk quiz show is either incredibly easy and its shocking to see so many fail, or basically just unfair with how insane the questions are with no inbetween. this is the latter.

Thanks for recording this moment. This is one of the most historic questions (and moments) of Only Connect. Also, a game show where the quiz question changes by a team just getting an answer wrong is amazing to me. (I have watched this several times over a year and I always warn people about Only Connect with this clip.)

Jfc, the reactions in these comments are a bloody headache. On one hand, you have folks absolutely glazing the show, saying that it requires a galaxy-brain to appreciate and dismissing anyone who dislikes it as a low-IQ troglodyte — while on the other, you have people bashing the whole concept of the show and calling it "pretentious" for daring to have these kinds of difficult riddles. Ffs, it's just a bloody show! It's neither "the smartest thing ever" nor "the dumbest thing ever". Youse need to mellow a bit.

I often watch Only Connect with my father and uncle of an evening. We consider it a success if any of us get a single question right during the entire show. We rarely do.

There are a lot of people here getting quite angry at the impossibility of this question. It reminds me a bit of when I was much, much younger and i'd watch my grandma do the cryptic crossword in the newspaper. She'd power through it at great speed. And i was absolutely perplexed - she'd read out a clue and it would be something like "Oxtail soup for three? Now there's a cow-shaped greenhouse" and after a few seconds she'd go, "oh, of course - the answer is Picasso" or something - something that absolutely nonsensical. "How do you even GET these??" I'd ask, and she'd say "when you've been doing these for as long as i have, you get used to the way they work, the different kinds of clues, the tricks they use". And i always think of her when Only Connect is on. I've been watching it for a long time now, and i can answer a few of the questions in each round (sometimes), because i'm used to the question-setters' ways of working and their bag of tricks. So i think this question here is entirely gettable.
