Tanaka has a kick technique that suits him and he can do it that way because his hips are strong so I dont under estimate the power. However with back kick he he raises his foot "late". It's what we used to call scooping. When you turn around keep the body upright and move into neko ashi dachi. Then raise your leg as in mae geri and kick backwards. Pivot on the base leg. Doing it this way will improve your balance and also leave room for escape if the opponent is fast and moving in on the kick...you can merely abandon the kick, move forward and then turn around. Always in balance.

Never practiced Shotokan but this is not a back kick. He is over rotating and its virtually a spinning side kick. The instructions do not match the actual kick being performed.
