Way cool man, love this project . I think it would bee cool to hook it to a bench supply and find its cut out/off voltage, so you can get a idea of how long your 2 or 3 typical cells will last .
I wonder if accidental pressing more than one button would drain faster / reboot . if you set the IR sensor to be looking out a hole on the button face, you might be able to use it as a right side up detector, so if the remote is upside down or covered by something and obviously not in use, you could actually sleep your MCU for a few seconds , and waiting for the ambient IR level to rise again . the way putting remote down, button side down would almost be like a auto OFF . Well its a great project, cool to see it run directly from cells.

to run at less than 5V, you are using a resonator slower than 16mhz yes?
