So if you only had three fragrances, what would they be and why?

There are 5 basic moods or occasions I have a scent for:
Polished - professional or formal events.
Casual - Just hanging out with friends.
Playful - Social but informal occasions such as parties or barhopping.
Romantic - Dates
Hot Weather - Anything over about 85 degrees.

When you first get into fragrance it is very tempting to go crazy and buy as much as you can get. It's very easy to fall in love with many frags. I've had 30 or more at times (full bottles and decants). Ridiculous. I'd never use all the juice, especially if I kept adding fragrances. I have an 95% full 8 oz. bottle of Mitzah. I will never use it all. Poor choice because it's too big, too expensive, and it serves the same purpose as other frags in my collection I reach for more. I strongly recommend getting decants initially. And then very slowly and deliberately choosing a few full bottles after you are positive they pass the reach test. That means you reach for them regularly without hesitation. This would be it for me:

1. SIGNATURE Dior Vetiver CP (discontinued but still some out there. Personal ATF. Fresh elegant perfection.)

2. Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum (serious, substantive, casual plus. This NOT plain Sauvage btw.)

3. Lubin Idole (dressy, decadent, and exotic goodness)

4. Creed Aventus (because Aventus)

5. Guerlain Tonka Imperiale (showin' off beast)

6. Nasomatto Narcotic Venus (floral perfection)

The truth is there are hundreds of frags that any one person could fall in love with. If money was no object and someone bought everything they ever liked it would go to waste eventually and not be a thoughtful approach. You can only use so much juice. It's not like collecting coins where you can admire volumes of items at a time and they hold their value.

I say try a bunch of samples and decants and whittle your collection down to what you actually use in real life. I agree with the post that a small collection should meet your various needs (a fresh regular, date night, dress up, etc.) is a good goal. It gets very hard to narrow down those choices however. It would be hard for me to pick three fragrances houses let alone three frags. The number is up to the collector. Another wrinkle is the fact that your nose changes over time. Things I once loved are just okay now. Don't commit to expensive bottles too soon.

Fresh—Armani Code Parfum
Dark—Valentino Uomo Born In Roma Coral Fantasy
Wild—YSL Myslf
Other categories I would include for my lifestyle and geographic location: a dedicated freshie like Light Blue Intense or Man Eau Fraiche, and a versatile true “blue” frag like BDC or Luna Rossa Ocean or something.

You have the BEST videos. I've been watching other creators, but the more I watch yours, the more I seek your videos for information, advice and wisdom. You really do make the most helpful videos to me. Great presentation, editing and sense of humor too. I've LOLd several times, even just at thumbnails.

I really like these "basics" series.

My favorite all time versatile fragrance is D& G The One
Formal Events/ Cold Weather is Bentley Intense for Men

These two are my go-to for when I do not want to think about what I want to wear as a scent. with D&G I get a tobacco, amber and musk vibe like a gentleman at a hookah lounge. On the other hand, I get a very cinnamon, rum and woody/spicy note from Bentley Intense which gives the vibe of a gentleman who is on the high-end scale.

i just look at it this way - the ones i truly fall in love with, and you usually know the ones you truly love more than anything else. anything i just kinda like, is not full bottle worthy. i never feel comfortable wearing a scent as an obligation. hell, i love to wear fragrances around my house most of the time, just as something to enjoy for 8 hours and make my day better

Ok, it's not three, but I put them in preference order. :-) And I also have a ton of scents for work and run errands.

I'm young and don't really have money to buy lots of fragrances. Those are my three. I bought 2 and got gifted one.

Avon Elite Gentleman (inexpensive sport/job fragrance)

Stronger than you by Emporio Armani (The show-off sweet fragrance)

Carolina Herrera CHIC for men (Casual/Summer fragrance with a lot of watermelon)

I'm sure im wrong but so be it :D
