Pet otters are rare in the pet trade for a reason. Asian small-clawed otters, if you can find a breeder, will cost $4000+ Definitely not a pet for beginners, or even many experienced pet owners.

Welcome to MASpets! A channel dedicated to providing high quality information about exotic, alternative, and unique pets, as well as traditional ones. This channel supports the freedom of pet owners to care for the species of their choice as long as that animal has been shown to thrive in human care under the right conditions. We strongly believe that facts and education, not admonition, is the best policy for encouraging potential pet keepers to choose the best pet for their living situation. We believe there is no such thing as a ‘good pet’, and do not promote any particular species as pets, however we understand that the desire of some to own something different is essential to their expression and existence as an individual. Whether you are considering a pet, or are just interested in the subject, this channel invites you to become informed about the exciting world of animal diversity.

There are hundreds of species of exotic pets! Some examples include: fennec fox, porcupine, serval, wallaby, boa constrictor, rainbow crab, bush baby, zebra, squirrels, ostrich, kinkajou, macaws, springhare, lemur, leopard gecko, tarantula, capybara, sloth, owl, cockatoo, muntjac deer, lion, short-tailed opossum, raccoon, scorpion, green iguana, axolotl...and many more.

Domesticated exotic pets include: camels, alpaca, reindeer, zebra finch, pot-bellied pig, hedgehog, domestic rats, hamster, gerbil, goldfish, guinea fowl, Bengal cat, peacock, fainting goats, and sugar gliders.

We post introductory videos to animals that can be kept as pets, care tips, address controversies, legal issues, and more. Please see the posted links for more information about this subject!

If you can buy a person on the dark web, you can probably find an otter.

I appreciate the sheer realistic-ness of this video. Showing how cute the otters are while concisely explaining why keeping otters as pets wouldn't be a good idea for most people.

The Asian small-clawed Otter is listed as ‘vulnerable’ by wildlife monitoring authorities. They are very popular as pets in Japan however, and there are many Otter channels on YT. Unfortunately, most are kept in tiny apartments. However, they appear to be well looked after, and are fun to watch. They would not make ideal pets however, as they require a lot of stimulation and are very active. The pet Otters that I have seen are very young, and are not de-sexed. As they get older, I think they will be hard to manage, particularly if they are kept in breeding condition. They are a gregarious animal and in the wild they live in large family groups. Kept in isolation, they could become aggressive.they also live for about twenty years, so they would be a long term commitment.

I got an otter and realized I had made a huge mistake. Having just one otter is not enough, you should have at least two or non at all, because they are extremely social. I now own three otters, all female

Im going to build a large outdoor enclosure, that will cost thousands of dollars, but i want to get couple, but I'm thinking of getting rescued ones that order can't be rereleased or came from bad owners, instead of buying a baby

Yeah they are super cute, but I dont think I would be able to manage em well.

I'm just trying to figure out why anything that's not a cat or dog needs a "this is also a dangerous animal that can kill you" disclaimer, because everything can harm you and no human has ever said "it's easy to care for any animal on the planet."

Honestly, the day I do plan on getting one, is when I have the money and the resources to make sure they’re taken care of. Getting an exotic pet license is the first step. And depending, I might look for a breeder either in the U.S. or in Japan (since they’re a popular exotic pet there). They’re basically water ferrets. :3

I wouldn't say it's "unfortunate" that more states are banning exotic pet ownership. There's a good reason for this - way too many people buy exotic pets like toys and can't take proper care of them and then the animals end up being abused or abandoned.

Thanks for the realistic info. Also, I understand small-clawed otters can live 20 years, so that is quite a commitment. Caring for an animal this active, curious, social, & intelligent would be a full-time job, it's out of my league for sure. A cat who can take care of herself while I'm gone all day is more my speed. So I'll just 💓💓 the internet otters from a distance, as well as the ones I sometimes see in the local river.

Love this light jaunty music accompanying a video trying its best to dissuade you from getting an otter.

Allowing foreign pets but disalloawing native ones is an ecological disaster waiting to happen

Something not mentioned is cost of feeding. Most otters need to eat 25% of their body weight each day!

If someone worked to breed a domestic otter, I'd be down for it. But most everyone that want an otter or exotic animal in general usually want the wild variety. Even though they THINK they have the right enclosures, they really don't. Most zoos don't have good enclosures even, but they at least have professionals that work with and care for the species and are attempting to do breeding programs to help save them rather than the selfish "Because I want one" mentality most wanting them have. Asian small claws are closest to domestication, but i'm yet to see one these owners with a even slightly decent setup for them. And really, you shouldn't have just one otter, Asian small claw is highly social of the otters and needs a companion, so got to get at least one other for them to keep company with.
