WHAT IS FELLOWSHIP?
Greek Word - Koinonia "sharing in common, communion"
It appears for the first time in Acts 2:42 where it says, “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
Fellowship should be characterized by the church and when we say church, we are talking about the body of believers in Christ, not the building. With that, let’s break down Acts 2:42.
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” NKJV
Apostles’ doctrine - the study of the word of God which talks about who God is, who Jesus Christ is, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Fellowship - It means an intimate sharing of one’s self to one another. Koinonia also means contribution. Check out Romans 15:26.
1. Look after each other. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
2. Practice love toward others. (John 13:34-35)
3. Learn about God through each other. (1 Peter 5)
Breaking of bread
In the days of the disciples, breaking of bread was also symbolic of the oneness in Spirit.
As we said earlier, koinonia also means communion and we remember what Christ did for us on the cross. We share that oneness in Spirit.
Prayers
Besides studying the word, praying is important in the gathering of believers.
In Ephesians 6:13-20, Paul exhorts the Ephesians about the whole armor of God.
The Fellowship of the church is not just being together, it’s doing God’s will together.
