I have this edition. I worked for a bookbinders in the vac before I went to college. My boss, a lovely man named Don Williams, asked me if there was any book that might come back in the returns due to damage etc that I might like and I said “The Lord of the Rings” please. In my first term at college I felt completely out of place, a council estate kid in a hall of residence where everyone was from private or all-girl grammar schools and we had nothing in common. I couldn’t eat, made myself ill and took to my bed. One day the head of hall brought me a parcel. Don had sent me what I asked for and it was this glorious edition. I started reading and could not stop till I had finished it. Frodo and Sam’s journey with all its pain and anguish and determination to finish their task spurred me on to get out of bed and start living again. 60 years later I still have it and it has been my talisman whenever life gets tough.

The way you describe this edition makes it sound as mythical as a gift from the elves. Absolutely love this

This is actually how Tolkien wanted to publish it originally. The book was divided in six parts, but he had never planned on making it into a three- books-series until his editor told him he had to.

Printing onto this paper must be so special since the letters on the other side can't shine through while still having to be so incredibly thin! Fascinating!

I love this edition, the paper is obviously very thin and when you read it, you keep worrying that you are going to rip the paper, but it is very strong paper, I can hold the entire book by just the end of one page, it is that strong. I would not risk doing that on my other copies.

My father passed down this book unto me shortly before passing. It remains unopened since. Very beautiful book.

That's why the entire Bible is able to fit into a single book binding.

Tom, your love for Tolkein is infectious and your rare book knowledge is fascinating.

I’m sure the pages are Bible thin and the font is rather small, but that addition has me drooling. I love Lord of the rings and I have my own special additions of the quartet which includes the hobbit.

I have a copy of that edition. I was working at a bookstore when it first came out. It will go to my daughter when that time comes. So very happy to see it featured here.

A very beautiful edition, the crinkling of the paper, and yes, the waiting for shadows to form when light falls onto the letters.

I have the full Oxford English Dictionary (20 odd volumes normally) in one book. The paper is very thin and there are nine pages on each leaf. It comes with a magnifying glass!

They have made bibles out of this or similar paper for decades. They called it onion skin paper I believe, not sure if this is the same.

That would be my favorite book too. It's all together with maps! I've always loved this story since I was a teenager and read it for the first time. Every few years or so I read it again. I was so excited when the movie came out, they did such a good job. 😘

After I noticed how you were turning the pages and the sound they made, I realized it was "Bible paper". 😊 Also learned today what Bible paper is apparently actually called. 😁
