Building common ground is so important because people tend to forget what they have in common (for example) in a loaded argument. Focus on the things you have in common and then you're able to approach topics you might disagree on.

Humour always works wonders, man. Can't emphasise this enough. Not only does it help you bond with the audience, but you seem so much more confident that you can make them laugh too. Which you can, by the way.

Common ground is everything, I used this same method when I worked in mental health. I always like to say I know a little about about a broad range of things.

During professional introductions, I literally extend my hand for a handshake, while waving with the other hand and saying, "Hi, I'm (whichever name seems to fit the dresscode of the office that's hosting) and—just a heads up—I'm painfully socially awkward!" Always with a sincere and genuine smile or chuckle about it. (It's usually followed up with a brief clarification that it's my secret weapon in disarming my anxiety... "But, give it long enough and it'll show itself somehow!" And I always take time to appreciate the response and point out some value in whatever it was.)

People love to talk about themselves. If you ask them a lot of questions, they'll love you.

I am a programmer and the procedures you propose are always very efficient and elegant. This is something I i hold in the highest regard as a programmer and person.

my biggest thing is learning that when there is no common ground to just let it go instead of stand there and feel awkward because i didn't connect with a person. sometimes it just don't work and that's okay

That's how I did dating... many, many moons ago... Break the ice with a little humor then keep the other person talking and chime in with stuff you have in common, ignoring the stuff you don't...

This is great!

I'd love to know more about the second part. How to transition from self to them.

"How about you?" is my best guess but maybe, it's too simple(?)

My dilemma is asking too much questions and becoming interrogative, putting them on the spot, rather than making them feel comfortable.

How to get that sweet spot?

Thanks!

Sir, could you talk about shaking hands, who put the hands out first when introducing oneself?
